Description
This broad-based programme in Building Services Engineering with an emphasis on Engineering Design of the Built Environment, should enable the successful graduate to aspire to a relatively senior post in the rapidly changing Building Services Industry. The programme aims to give students a solid theoretical understanding of the various subject disciplines important to the profession. As the student progresses through the programme, his/her increased theoretical understanding progressively underpins experience of the industry gained from the working environment. The programme is arranged on a modular basis, the initial modules being designed to provide a broad-based understanding of a range of engineering, technology, management and mathematics subject areas. The remaining modules are more specialised in nature, giving the student a highly-focused learning experience that is immediately useful. After gaining the BSc, the student may continue on to the BEng(Hons) in Building Services Engineering at Glasgow Caledonian University. Entry to this programme would be into Year 3 of the four year programme. This gives all students the opportunity of continuing their studies to Honours degree level and towards full chartered status.
In the area of building services engineering, GCU was awarded the CIBSE Happold Brilliant Award 2011-2012 for industry-relevant programmes and high quality teaching.

Assessment Methods
Our programme has been developed in conjunction with industry, making our graduates well equipped to enter the employment market in professional, well paid positions.
It is flexible, allowing students to study with us either full time or on a part-time basis to help engineers who are currently employed in the building services industry improve their knowledge and skills.
Teaching Methods
We use a varied range of traditional and more modern methods to assess our students; from exams to case studies, formal design projects, dissertations, laboratory reports and web-based on-line tests. Our students also enter a national building design competition which is also used as an assessment tool. Several local businesses have set up competitions where our students can win prizes.
Our students also have access to the University campus Plant Rooms and Services and the Building Management System, which is used for teaching purposes in a live setting.
Our students have the opportunity to learn abroad as part of the Erasmus International Exchange programme, with our partner university the Wroclaw Technical University in Poland.
