The Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Faculty is committed to providing the best possible educational experience for all of our students as preparation for a successful career. Thus students need to acquire broad, long half-life understanding of the fundamental tenets of chemical engineering, which is provided in the core courses, specialized knowledge of great depth, provided in elective courses and the ability to define, attack and resolve original problems, which is the outcome of thesis research. There is close interaction between students and faculty on all of these elements of our graduate program.

Courses:

  •  Separation Processes
  •  Chemical Reaction Engineering
  •  Polymer Science & Engineering
  •  Colloid & Interfacial Systems
  •  Optical Spectroscopy
  •  Electrochemical Energy
  •  Math Methods Engineering
  • Transport Phenomena
  •  Advanced Chemical Reaction Engineering
  •  Computational Chemistry
  •  Advanced Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics
  •  Structure of Solids
  • Cellular/ Tissue Engineering
  • Mass Transfer Membrane Systems

The Master's of Science degree, with thesis, requires 15 credit hours of graduate course work (5 courses) with a minimum 3.0 grade point average, and 15 credit hours of thesis research and graduate seminar. The results of the research are presented as a Master's thesis and defended in a final oral defense.

Requirements

The Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering requires a statement of intent, three letters of recommendation, a GRE score, a CV/resume, and an unofficial transcript. The TOEFL score is required for those in which English is not their first language, except for those who have completed a degree in the US. The department does not have any minimum score requirements, except for the TOEFL score (min 100). For applicants who have completed work beyond a bachelor's degree, records of both graduate and undergraduate work are taken into account.

Tuition Scholarship

Approximately 97 percent of students in the Graduate School — both doctoral and master’s — receive full-tuition scholarships that include all fees except for a small student activity fee. For the 2015-16 academic year, tuition is $47,700, including Health and Technology fees.

For programs that offer only master’s degrees, varying levels of support, ranging from tuition assistance to full tuition plus a stipend, are provided. Professional master’s programs normally require tuition, although there are some merit-based scholarships available. Students should check with their individual program to see what level of funding is available.

Need-Based Financial Aid

Prospective first year students wishing to be considered for limited need-based financial assistance must first complete anInternational Student Certification of Finances along with the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE adapted for international students. Both documents are due at the time of application.International students seeking financial aid must apply during the admissions process. All international students that are admitted without financial aid are expected to fully fund their studies.  Financial aid is not available in later years. If you think that you will need financial aid at any point during your studies, you should apply for financial aid at the time of your application.

Merit Scholarships

Notre Dame offers merit scholarships to a limited number of international students, accepted for admission as a first-time incoming freshman, who demonstrate exceptional accomplishment, leadership, commitment to service, and intellectual promise.Ranging from $5,000 per year to the full cost of attendance, these scholarships are typically renewable for four years and recipients may be invited to participate in leadership development and enrichment opportunities as an additional benefit of their award.

Special Fellowships:

Kinesis – Fernández Richards Family Fellowships

  • Full tuition
  • Stipend for doctoral students of $24,000 to $30,000, according to program, on a 12-month basis for up to five years;
  • Stipend for master’s students of $16,000 on a 12-month basis
  • Full coverage of the University’s health insurance premium cost

Deans’ Fellowships

  • Full tuition
