Five reasons to study Classics in Leiden: * The MA offers an array of specialised courses and research topics tailored to your individual needs. * You benefit from the expertise of three Universities, as the Classics programme is organised in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam (VU). * You are free to follow courses from other relevant fields such as ancient history or classical philosophy * The courses of the MA are taught by a small but dedicated staff of active researchers, many of whom have received prestigious prizes and research grants. * We value intensive and informal communication with our students.

Specialisations

The MA in Classics offers the choice of two specialisations-Literature or Linguistics. Both tracks make use of an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to the study of the languages and the cultural-historical subjects, enabling you to concentrate on areas outside of your immediate field of study.

Specialisation: Linguistics

This specialisation focuses on linguistic and formal aspects to examine ancient textual sources. You will concentrate on Syntax (the use of aspect and modes, particles), Pragmatics and Discourse Analysis (examining communication strategies and rhetoric for the transmission of information) and reflection on language use in antiquity. Please use the menu on the right hand side to view the other specialisations of this programme.

Specialisation: Literature

Within this specialisation you will focus on the study of ancient textual sources, primarily on their content. You will cover a wide array of topics (depending on the courses you choose), including Interpretation, Genre, Nachleben, Literary Criticism in Antiquity and Intertextuality.

Classics has its own national research school, OIKOS, that organises a number of courses for PhD students in the area of Graeco-Roman Antiquity. OIKOS stimulates and coordinates research efforts in the same area, and promotes the formation of an international network of researchers. The procedure for admission to the PhD track is conducted through job applications.
