Description

The BS in computer science degree gives you a solid foundation in the major areas of computer science: programming, database management, systems and hardware. The skills and expertise that you will gain from studying these fields are in high demand in all industries, and will help you in whatever career you pursue.

Webster’s programming courses teach the major languages used today:

  • C++ (the industry standard)
  • Visual Basic
  • Java

Database management courses give you expertise in database software, such as:

  • Access
  • Mysql
  • PHP

Systems and hardware courses cover such topics as:

  • Systems analysis and design
  • Network management
  • Operating systems
  • Network security

At least 50% of the work in most courses is “hands-on” and takes the form of projects and portfolios.

We also offer courses in computer applications, such as Excel and InDesign, which are useful regardless of your major.

The BS in Computer Science with emphasis in Information Management gives you an understanding of both the technical and business aspects of information technology. It includes courses in finance and accounting and is particularly useful for students interested in banking and financial services careers.

Course Content

Degree requirements:

A minimum of 128 credit hours consisting of the following:

  • 36 required credit hours
  • Applicable university global citizenship or general education program hours
  • Electives

At least 18 of the required 36 computer science credit hours must be taken at Webster University. All upper-level courses must be taken at Webster University.

  • COSC 1550 Computer Programming I (3 hours)
  • COSC 1560 Computer Programming II (3 hours)
  • COSC 1570 Math for Computer Science (3 hours)
  • COSC 2610 Operating Systems (3 hours)
  • COSC 2670 Telecommunications (3 hours)
  • COSC 2810 Systems Analysis and Design (3 hours)
  • COSC 3050 Data Structures I (3 hours)
  • COSC 3100 Data Structures II (3 hours)

Students will choose two of the following courses:

  • Computer science courses (COSC) numbered 3000 or above, (6 hours)
    excluding: COSC 3900 Practicum (3 hours)
    and COSC 3910 Project (3 hours)

Students are required to take one pair of the following courses:

  • COSC 4110 Database Concepts (3 hours)
  • COSC 4120 Database Applications (3 hours)
    or
  • COSC 4250 Object-Oriented Analysis and Design (3 hours)
  • COSC 4260 Object-Oriented Programming (3-6 hours)

English Language Requirements

Requirements

Freshmen are admitted to the University following the successful completion of a twelve-year American high school program or its international equivalent as recognized by Webster.

Students whose native or predominant language is not English may need additional English proficiency that requires them to enroll in English as a Second Language (ESL).
