The taught component introduces the student to the multifaceted nature of caring for a critically ill patient. The modular approach allows students to evaluate critical care from an evidence-based perspective, starting with assessment at ward level through to the critical components and then to discharge. Professional issues, including clinical governance and interprofessional practice, will be covered, as well as the psychosocial aspects relevant to caring for critically ill patients.

The modules allow for student choice within the module subject. The assessments are structured to allow students to evaluate the topic in relation to their practice and professional base.

Fifty places are offered each year and the majority of students are self-funded, though some obtain awards from charities and trusts. The course takes two years in total (9 months stage 1a, 9 months stage 1b, and a further six months for the dissertation stage 2).

Students will access the modules through the medium of Learning Central which is Cardiff Universitys Virtual Learning Environment (or VLE) which delivers the course materials. This is accessible via all forms of computer (desk top / lap top / tablet), smart phones and ipads; via a dedicated Learning Central application (downloadable from the Apple App. Store).
