The programs core staff are involved in a wide range of research projects and public platforms, both national and international. Particular strengths of the program include ethnographic and interpretive methodologies, and collaboration across disciplines on the following research themes:

* Transnational mobility, ethnic identities and citizenship
* Gender, sexuality, intimacy
* Ideology and politics of representation
* Memory studies and oral history

Students in the Masters program can pursue two degree pathways. All students are expected to complete one year of intensive seminars. During the second year, students who are interested in research or academic careers can opt to work on a research theme of their own choice, under the supervision of a faculty member. Such students are expected to write a well-argued thesis, subject to evaluation by a thesis committee. Examples of recent MA research topics by students include:

* Independent/alternative artist initiatives in contemporary Istanbul
* Being a soldiers mother in Turkey
* The Turkish sub-genre of military coup narratives
* Representations of honor among Turkish immigrant women in Berlin
* The politics of Kurdish children and youth in urban space
* Tourist gaze and tourist narratives in Southeastern Anatolia
* Relations to the Western literary canon in Pamuk and Rushdie
* Censorship on visual arts in contemporary Turkey

Students who desire enhanced specialization for careers in culture industries or non-governmental organizations can choose the non-thesis path. Such students are expected to fulfill their MA requirements by undertaking an additional semester of seminar work, subject to the approval and supervision of an academic committee.

The Cultural Studies Program is committed to addressing the critical relations between culture, power, and history through multi-disciplinary engagement, innovative research, methodological openness, and critical pedagogical practice. Combining the strengths of the humanities and social sciences, the MA Program in Cultural Studies seeks to become a unique center of research and debate on culture and politics in Turkey and the world. It also aims to contribute to the ongoing critical self-reflection of the humanities and the social sciences through local and international initiatives. Particular areas of research include Memory and Cultural Heritage; Conflict, Violence and Trauma; Media, Law and Public Spheres; Nationalism and Transnationalism; and Gender and Sexuality.The standing faculty includes specialists in Anthropology (Ayse Gul Altinay, Ayse Parla, Leyla Neyzi), History (Tulay Artan, Halil Berktay), Literature (Hulya Adak, Sibel Irzik, Annedith Schneider), Political Science (Nedim Nomer), Conflict Resolution (Betul Celik) and Sociology (Ahmet Oncu, Ayse Oncu), and the program regularly invites visiting scholars in these fields and in others, including Media Studies and Visual Studies.The Cultural Studies Program at Sabanci is actively involved in European Union Socrates exchange programs, allowing for the exchange of both faculty and students. There are currently agreements with universities in Denmark, Germany, Holland, Norway and Sweden.Current projects involving faculty members and students include the TUBITAK-TUBA-YOK Funded Research Project "Gender-based Violence: Analyzing the Problem and the Struggle Against It" and the EU 6th Framework funded EUROSPHERES Project. For graduate scholarships, your academic background is evaluated in accordance with the required criteria during the admittance and if you are considered to be eligible , various types of scholarships are granted with the decision of Sabanci University Scholarship Committee.

Although the scholarships go on being granted unless you fail to meet the determined criteria, at the end of each academic year the Scholarship Committee offers various types of scholarships to the honored merit degree students with respect to GPA. Each scholarship offered during education period is evaluated with respect to the scholarship's scope and the scholarship provided at the first entrance to the university may be cancelled in case of getting a higher scholarships.

For graduate scholarships, there are several opportunities for foreign students. Each year, many students are having different type of scholarships.

Arts & Social Sciences Graduate Programs

Students are informed regarding the scope of Graduate Educational Scholarship provided prior to their enrollment during the admission process. Graduate scholarship recipients are proposed by the Admission Jury based on students' academic history, then evaluated by the related Graduate School Administrative Board, and finally confirmed by the President of the University. Continuation of the scholarship depends on the decision of Faculty according to GPA.

2010-2011 Academic Year Graduate Scholarships

Students accepted to SU master or doctorate programs are offered one of the scholarships below. (IT, EMBA are non-scholarship programs)

FULL SCHOLARSHIP

It covers full tuition fee exemption, monthly stipend payment between September-June and dormitory/transportation support for ten months.

Master: Housing (room for double)(**) + 950 TL/ month

Housing Compensation: 1450 TL/month

PhD with BA/BS degree (*): Housing (room for double)(**) + 1000 TL/ month

Housing Compensation: 1500 TL/month

PhD with MA/MS degree (*): Housing room for double)(**) + 1200 TL/ month

Housing Compensation: 1700 TL/month

(*) The monthly stipend might increase to 1,400 TL after passing the Doctoral Qualifying Exam with housing and increases to 1,900 TL with transportation support.

(**) Housing support covers staying rooms for double. (If students want to stay in single rooms, they should pay the difference at the beginning of the semester.)

TUITION FEE EXEMPTION SCHOLARSHIP

One of the scholarships below could be offered :

* Full tuition fee exemption
* 2/3 tuition fee exemption
* 1/2 tuition fee exemption
* 1/4 tuition fee exemption

PROJECT SCHOLARSHIP

Students working within the context of research projects are provided monthly stipend.

TUBITAK BIDEB SCHOLARSHIP

Master or doctorate students who have full scholarships in domestic are provided full tuition fee exemption and housing(**) / housing compensation between September-June for 10 months

TUITION AND DORMITORY SCHOLARSHIP

Master or doctorate students are provided full tuition fee exemption and housing(**) /housing compensation between September-June for 10 months

OTHER SCHOLARSHIPS

Aysegul Arsoy who has a great contribution at the stage of the foundation and envisagement of the university- Scholarship is granted by faculty for one of the MBA students each year. This scholarship includes tuition fee exemption, monthly 800 TL stipend payment between September-June, housing(room for double)(**) or 490 TL transportation support for ten months and book support up to 200$ annually.
