In only a few years, the rapid development of digital media technologies has completely transformed our everyday lives and generated new applications.

Just think of how online YouTube videos, Spotify music streaming, smartphone apps, microblogs, Twitter, Wikipedia, and social media networks such as Facebook have changed the world.

 

What used to be known as media companies are now technological solutions operating across multiple platforms, making it possible to share digital media content and analyse user behaviour based on the large volumes of data being generated.

 

Study programme focus

In an area characterized by constant change, there is a need for engineers who will not be constrained by new technologies, but rather gain strong technical competencies to develop new types of interaction between people and software—which is reflected in connection with game design, personalization of media content, or smartphone apps using sensors to model how we perceive the surrounding environment.

The study programme will thus provide you with a deep understanding of the underlying digital media technologies and related business aspects.

As a student on the programme, you will have ample scope for working on your own projects and participating in DTU research projects—for instance by developing intelligent apps using the built-in sensors in smartphones, modelling social network interaction, and designing new types of interaction between people and software. Furthermore, you can be involved in media projects focused on computer graphics and computer game design, allowing you to work on emerging issues in interdisciplinary settings outside DTU. 

You may also have the opportunity to transform your own projects into a start-up company through DTU's many entrepreneurial activities, such as DADIU Greenhouse, AppGarage, DTU Skylab, Createch, Stardust, and Venture Cup.

Focus areas

The MSc programme in Digital Media Engineering allows you to specialize in one of the five focus areas:

  • Social media and apps
  • UX User experience
  • Data science
  • Computer games
  • Computer graphics

You should be aware, however, that your choice of courses in your individual study plan offers a high degree of flexibility. Therefore, you have every opportunity to design your own study programme and career by choosing from the wide range of courses offered at DTU.

To obtain the MSc degree in Digital Media Engineering, the student must fulfil the following requirements:

  • Have passed General Competence Courses adding up to at least 30 ECTS points
  • Have passed Technological Specialization Courses adding up to at least 30 ECTS points
  • Have performed a Master Thesis of at least 30 ECTS points within the field of the general program
  • Have passed a sufficient number of Elective Courses to bring the total number of ECTS points of the entire study up to 120 

General admission requirements

Only applicants holding either a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, a Bachelor in Engineering or a Bachelor of Natural Science degree can be admitted to a Master of Science in Engineering programme. From September 2017 the bachelor degree must be less than 10 years old.

The individual MSc Eng programme states in detail which bachelor programmes qualify and whether applicants have to complete supplementary educational activities.

Requirements for supplementary educational activities can equate to up to 30 ECTS credits and are specified in the form of a list of courses under the individual MSc Eng programmes.

The specific requirements must be met before graduating from the bachelor programme or in connection with conditional admission to a particular MSc Eng programme. The courses must be passed prior to the commencement of studies within one year from the conditional admission.

Supplementary educational activities in connection with conditional admission to an MSc Eng programme do not form part of the MSc Eng programme, and partial tuition fees are charged. If the supplementary courses have not been passed within the deadlines specified, the conditional admission to the programme is withdrawn.

The Master of Science in Engineering programmes are offered in English. Therefore applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English (B-level, IELTS, TOEFL- or Pearson test).

Academic requirements for this programme

BSc Eng Students from the Technical University of Denmark

The following BSc Eng Programmes at DTU entitle students to admission to the MSc Eng programme in Digital Media Engineering

  • Electrotechnology
  • IT and Communication Technology
  • Mathematics and Technology (for students who commence this BSc education later than September 2011)
  • Software Technology

To benefit as much as possible from the MSc program, it is recommended that elective courses in the BSc programme are used to build up the necessary prerequisites.

Other BSc Eng students have access to be admitted subject to having completed the courses below or equivalent courses. They appear among the prerequisites for the general competency courses.

BSc Eng students from other universities

BSc Eng students from relevant engineering educations at other universities have access to be admitted to the programme subject to having prerequisites similar to one of the DTU BSc programmes from which students are entitled to admission.

BSc Eng students with relevant degrees have access to be admitted if their competencies in programming, algorithms and applied math are comparable to those of candidates from one of the DTU BSc programmes from which students are entitled to admission. For example bachelors of Software Engineering from The Farao Islands are accepted.

B Eng Students from Other Universities

B Eng students from other institutions are admitted if they fulfill the prerequisites from DTU B Eng students. The requirements may be fulfilled by passing specified courses from a research based education prior to commencement on the MSc Eng programme in Digital Media Engineering. 

International Students

Applicants for the MSc programme in Digital Media Engineering should hold a BSc degree in relevant areas such as e.g. information and communication technologies or computer science. We expect applicants to master at least one programming language, have solid skills in engineering math and a strong interest in the technologies underlying either web and social interaction or computer graphics

Admission will be decided on the basis of the relevance and quality of the applicant's educational background.
