Students in ECE earn a Bachelor of Science (B. S.) degree in Education and Human Sciences with one or more of the following specializations:

1. Birth Through Age Five:

This program prepares students to work in educational settings such as Head Start, preschool programs, and child care centers. Graduates are also prepared to start their own early childhood program. Those who successfully complete this specialization will have completed the requirements for a South Dakota Birth through Preschool teaching certificate.

Students complete student teaching in the Fishback Center for Early Childhood Education on campus and complete a practicum in an off-campus early childhood setting. Within this specialization, students can choose to focus on infant and toddler development and care and/or administration of early childhood programs. Students interested in a South Dakota kindergarten endorsement on their teaching certificate are also required to complete a practicum experience in a kindergarten classroom.

2. Birth Through Age Eight

In addition to being prepared to work in early childhood settings such as Head Start, preschools, and child care centers, those who successfully complete this specialization meet the requirements for a South Dakota Birth to age 8 Early Childhood teaching certificate which enables them to teach grades K-3.

Students student teach in the Fishback Center for Early Childhood Education and a first, second, or third grade classroom.

3. Cooperative Elementary Education - Early Childhood Education

The cooperative elementary education specialization with Dakota State University (DSU) and Northern State University (NSU) is for students who are interested in teaching certification for elementary and middle school grades in the public school system in South Dakota. The courses specific to elementary education are offered by DSU and NSU faculty on the SDSU campus.

It typically takes five years to complete the cooperative program. Students complete a student teaching experience at the Fishback Center for Early Childhood Education and at a selected public school.

Requirements

Applicants should have an above average academic record at least equivalent to a "B-" average (2.60 out of 4.00), or be in the top 60% of their class with suitable academic preparation for the intended major.

The SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test), while not required, is encouraged and strongly recommended for freshman applicants. Students who graduated from U.S. high schools must submit an SAT score.

Academic Transcripts need to be originals or official certified true copies. If your transcripts are not in English, certified true translations must be attached. All upper secondary school-level work need to be demonstrated through your transcripts. It is common for applicants to submit transcripts prior to completion of their final year of secondary school. If you must submit transcripts prior to completion, please indicate your expected graduation date.
