The study of the department of Earth System Science and Technology (ESST) is an integrated academic area based on natural fluid science, which is common in both geo-environmental science for acquiring, analyzing and measuring information on the universe, the atmosphere and the sea for working out the mechanism of climate change and environmental conservation, and atmospheric and marine technologies for an orderly development of the earth’s undeveloped resources and space. The department was founded for the purpose of establishing measures against the greatest crisis since the beginning of our species faced by the air and sea that are maintaining our life-environment, and for training human resources.

ESST consists of four major courses:

  • Environmental Fluid Science aimed at comprehensively understanding and resolving the various issues of the complex fluid environment from a broad perspective throughout the entire natural fluid,
  • Basic Environmental Analysis aimed at clarifying the complex elementary step of earth system engineering and the systemization of geophysical fluid dynamics,
  • Environmental Metrology aimed at contributing to environmental conservation and forecasting, as well as for marine development and exploration by revealing the reality of the earth system by measurements and observations,
  • Environmental Forecasting aimed at working out the mechanism of climate change, the development of the numerical model, and the short-term forecasting of oceanic conditions.

Those who graduate from this department are given a doctorate in science, engineering or arts and sciences.

The graduates of the department play active roles in a diverse range of areas such as climate, oceanic and environmental assessment, consulting, universities, research institutes of local authorities and government bodies, various manufacturing industries including heavy industries, construction, shipbuilding and automobiles, information and software industries.
