Description

This programme is recognised as one of the most comprehensive in the country, and has been developed as the result of a collaboration between the School of Biological Sciences and the School of Environmental Sciences. As a result, studying Ecology at UEA provides you with a breadth of knowledge unparalleled at other institutions. Students are able to learn aspects from a range of subjects, including chemistry and marine biology, which offers students a diverse range of skills that are highly sought after by employers.

The School boasts excellent research facilities and a unique interdisciplinary approach to teaching. In the 2012 National Student Survey, the School of Biological Sciences at UEA was ranked 1st for teaching, out of 100 UK departments.

Our four-year ecology degree with a year in either Australasia, Europe or North America provides a great opportunity to combine your studies with the experience of study overseas.

Ecology is the study of how organisms behave, interact with, and evolve in response to their physical and biological environments. It seeks to explain the diversity, abundance, and distribution of organisms, and appeals to those who are interested in the richness of the biosphere and concerned with how it is affected by human activities. Ecology, and its sister disciplines, evolutionary biology and behaviour, therefore provide the basis for understanding how life’s diversity originated and will respond to climate change, pollution, the destruction of natural ecosystems, and the concomitant loss of global biodiversity.

Our programmes provide excellent opportunities to study the fundamental and applied aspects of population biology, evolution, community and ecosystem dynamics, habitat ecology, macro-ecology and conservation. The approaches used in exploring these topics range from molecular biology, evolutionary theory, mathematical modelling, plant science, animal behaviour, and field ecology to geographical information systems, climatology, environmental economics and resource management.

Course Content

During the third year of your course you will spend a year studying abroad at one of our exchange partners:

Australasia – This is the most recent addition to our year abroad portfolio and has proven itself an extremely popular programme. Current exchange partners include: Murdoch University, Perth; Macquarie University, Sydney; and University of Auckland, New Zealand.

North America – Our North American exchange programme is long-established and continues to be popular. We currently have exchange agreements with US universities in California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Missouri and Oregon. We also have exchange partners in Canada which currently include universities in British Columbia and Ontario.

Europe – Students on the European exchange programme will take appropriate language modules during the second year, in preparation for the third year spent at a university in Europe. Currently students can visit universities in France, Italy, Germany, Spain or Sweden. The acquisition of a second language and the experience of living and studying in Europe have proved a valuable asset to our graduates.
