This programme is designed for:

* those working in the public sector, public administration, government departments, the NHS, international agencies and elsewhere who wish to upgrade their existing skills by more exposure to up-to-date techniques and knowledge relevant to policy analysis in social and economic policy areas, and to public sector administration and financial management.
* those who want to build on their existing degrees in economics by obtaining further knowledge and expertise in more specialised areas, such as health economics, social policy analysis and public finance, whilst maintaining a broad range of career options in government, the public sector, health or public administration, research and policy centres, and elsewhere.
* those with a background in disciplines such as government, sociology, mathematics or natural sciences, but without a strong background in economics, who wish to develop their abilities in economics and related areas, with particular reference to the application of these skills in the fields of economic and social policy, administration and management.

Students who do not have a strong background in economics but who have other relevant qualifications or experience can take a Summer Session course in Economics and Quantitative Methods.

Course Structure

The programme has three core components:

* Applied Microeconomics for Decision-Making and Policy Analysis (Double Unit)
* Social Policy Analysis (Double Unit) and
* Either Econometrics or Quantitative Analysis or Econometric Methods for Research (Double Unit)

In addition students choose four optional units from:

* Finance and Investment
* Game Theory: Economic Applications
* Health Care Management
* Industrial Economics
* International Macroeconomics

* Political Economy from the General Equilibrium Point of View

* Public Sector Economics: Microeconomic Applications

Students may be allowed to take one or more of their optional units from the following courses in environmental economics offered by the Environment Department. Students wishing to do so must first ask their M.Sc. Director and the Environment Department's M.Sc. Director for permission, which is not automatic.

Minimum entry criterion is the equivalent of an upper second class degree primarily in economics from a UK university.English Language RequirementsThe department's normal English language requirements, are (a) an IELTS result of 6.5 or (b) a TOEFL result of 600 if paper-based, 250 if CBT and 100 if iBT, or (c) A, B, and C Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English.For those applicants who have already achieved an IELTS 6.0 and only need a 0.5 increase to make their offers unconditional, the University has approved a limited system of admission through satisfactory completion of the English for Academic and Research Purposes course (EARP1). The course is offered by the Centre for English Language Teaching and after successful completion of it and upon passing the end-of-course test, students will enter the Department directly and they do not need to re-take IELTS at the end of August.
