The Ph.D. in Education prepares you to become a researcher in academia, government, and the private sector. Our program prepares you to:
* create new knowledge about educational processes and policies;
* lead development of research-based instructional, professional, and outreach programs; and
* promote effective and equitable educational practices for all learners.
Graduates of the program are expected to influence educational practice in the United States and abroad through original research efforts, thereby contributing to the advancement of knowledge in education, discovering exemplary educational practices, and contributing to local and national educational policy. The Ph.D. in Education offers two concentrations: Theory, Organization, and Policy (TOP) and Learning, Cognition, Instruction, and Development (LCID).

Requirements
Official transcripts, personal statement, and three letters of recommendation. One letter of recommendation is expected from a supervisor or former supervisor and one from a professor, or a former professor, or someone who can assess the candidate's potential for academic work. Applicants are required to have a masters' degree.

Funding
All first year PhD students are supported by departmental or university fellowships or graduate assistantships, which provide stipend, tuition remission, and sometimes student fees for the first year.After the first year, students will be supported by their advisors through fellowships and graduate assistantships.
There are also a number of multi-year fellowships available for advanced students through NSF and NIH training programs. BME also has a limited number of teaching assistantships for graduate students who demonstrate outstanding teaching skills.
