The study of literature offers the opportunity to engage with culture and its texts. English is a discipline whose history fuses an academic subject, a language, multiple nations, and an empire. It requires multiple theoretical approaches to a range of distinct but overlapping issues in different historical periods and geographic areas. You will be uniquely qualified to explore the various complexities that inhere in any scene of writing and textual production.Carleton offers a wide range of approaches to the study of English. Core courses will introduce you to the major periods of literature in English. YouпПХll also have the opportunity to examine particular genres, such as the novel or drama, and to examine the work of individual authors. YouпПХll also be able to explore recent developments in literary theory and in cultural and intercultural studies. Our creative writing courses are taught by professors who are published writers of fiction and poetry.
