The Master of Entrepreneurship degree is a 15-month programme designed to support those with an entrepreneurial spirit who want to start an innovative new venture and who aspire to the entrepreneurial lifestyle. The Master of Entrepreneurship degree is based upon the premise that the knowledge and skills needed to survive and thrive in business can be taught while the attitudes required of entrepreneurs can be identified and encouraged.

Duration of the Programme

A candidate must complete the requirements of the degree within 15 months of commencing the programme. The programme is not available part-time.

Level of Award of the Degree

The degree may be awarded with distinction or with credit.

Variations

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Commerce) may in exceptional circumstances approve a course of study which does not comply with these regulations

Structure of the Programme

  • Every programme of study shall satisfy the requirements set out in the MEntr Schedule.
  • A candidate must pass the required papers in Part A sequentially.
  • A candidate must pass all papers in Part A before commencing Part B.
  • A candidate must pass the required papers in Part B sequentially.
  • A candidate without sufficient grounding in specific areas may be directed by the Programme Director to either:
  • attend short programmes of instruction, or
  • carry out prescribed reading and study.

A formal examination may be required.

  • Before commencing ENTR 525 in Part B, a candidate shall obtain approval from the Programme Director for the business idea and the proposed approach.
  • A candidate may not present a paper or a business project report that has previously been accepted for another paper or qualification.

Withdrawal from the Programme

A candidate who withdraws from the programme may be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Commerce in Entrepreneurship provided that all the papers in Part A of the MEntr Schedule have been successfully completed

Examination

  • The report on the business project in ENTR 525 shall be assessed by at least two examiners. Each examiner shall supply a written report on the work and recommend a mark and grade on the basis of the work as submitted, and an overall result selected from the options as specified in clause (b) below.
  • The examiners may recommend that a report:
  • be accepted without amendments;
  • be accepted subject to amendments being made at the discretion, and to the satisfaction, of the Programme Director;
  • does not meet the criteria for the award of the degree, but may be revised and resubmitted for examination;
  • does not meet the criteria for the award of the degree, and should be rejected without right of resubmission.
  • Where examiners cannot agree on a result for the business project in ENTR 525, the Programme Director should so report to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Commerce) who shall arrive at a decision after taking such advice as he or she deems to be sufficient.
  • Amendments (regulation 5 (b)(ii) and revisions (regulation 5 (b)(iii), shall be completed by a specified date to be determined by the Programme Director.
  • A candidate shall be permitted to revise and resubmit a report for examination once only.
  • If a revised and resubmitted report is finally accepted, the result shall be either 'Pass' or 'Fail' (i.e. ungraded) and without eligibility for the award of the degree with distinction or credit.
  • If a report is rejected without the right of resubmission (regulation 5 (b)(iii)) a candidate may be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma on Commerce in Entrepreneurship provided all papers of Part A of the MEntr Schedule have been completed satisfactorily.

Admission to the ProgrammeAdmission to the programme shall be subject to the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Commerce) who must be satisfied that the candidate has the ability and experience to complete the degree.Every applicant must normally be a graduate or have an alternative professional qualification.In exceptional circumstances, an applicant who is not a graduate may be considered on the basis of alternative qualifications or satisfactory training and experience in management or administration in business or other entrepreneurial activity. Such preparation must be equivalent to a degree, and the candidate must provide evidence of ability to undertake advanced level academic study. The Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Commerce) may require a candidate to pass one or more prescribed papers either before admission to or concurrently with the programme.Applicants may be expected to have first obtained a satisfactory result in the Graduate Management Admission Test.An applicant for the degree will be required to attend an interview with the Director of Entrepreneurship.

University of Otago Coursework Master's Scholarship

The University of Otago Coursework Master's Scholarship provides funding to support course work-based Master's students studying at the University of Otago.

Information

Applicants must be:

- obtaining their first Otago Coursework Master's qualification

- domestic students or international students

- undertaking a papers based thesis*

* Coursework Master’s Scholarships are not available for the papers year of a two-year research Master’s degree.

Selection is based predominantly on academic merit and the applicant’s potential for research.
