Environmental and public health is a major concern to communities both locally and internationally. Our Environmental and Public Health degree is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH)so you will be able to become a Specialist Environmental Health Practitioner in public health on graduation.

Why study BSc Environmental and Public Health at Middlesex?

Our degree explores the issues of public health from a national and international perspective. You will analyse and evaluate environmental and public health problems in scientific, technical and managerial terms, while developing an informed, critical and imaginative attitude.

During the course you will explore how localised health issues impact upon communities globally and discover how pandemics can affect local communities facing political environmental and social challenges. Our students graduate as professional practitioners who meet the ten key areas of public health practice. Qualified practitioners are vital to the delivery of the Health Improvement Agenda (set out by the CIEH-Health Development Agency), which has opened up many career opportunities within the sector.

Course Content

What will you study?

Year 1 focuses on developing your knowledge with an emphasis on key skills in risk assessment and legal interpretation together with core sciences to underpin your scientific knowledge. After successfully completing Year 1 you will be awarded the Certificate in Environmental Health and, if you wish, you can leave the course at this point.

Year 2 is focused on developing practical competences and in the final year you will look closely at concepts of health promotion and education to improve health.

What will you gain?

The purpose of public health is to improve health and wellbeing as well as preventing diseases, which ultimately prolong life and so reduce social inequalities. The course provides you with the key skills and competences necessary to meet these objectives, and prepares you to apply for registration as a public health practitioner with either the CIEH or the Faculty of Public Health.

English Language Requirements

Requirements

Entry to this course requires a minimum of 5 GCSEs (Grade C or above) or 5 GCEs (Grade C or above), including: English Language, Mathematics and Science.

Applicants should also have one of the following:

  • A Level passes including at least one A level in a science or technology subject
  • A BTEC National Diploma or Certificate in an appropriate area normally with a minimum of 3 merits
  • A Relevant (Science) ACCESS course with a minimum of a pass mark
  • Appropriate Advanced GNVQ with at least 3 level III passes at merit standard
  • Passed a Higher Education Foundation Science programme.

Mature students with relevant experience will normally be interviewed to assess suitability for entry to the programme.

International entry requirements

English language requirements

You must have competence in English language and we normally require Grade C GCSE or an equivalent qualification. The most common English Language requirements for international students are IELTS 6.0 and over (with minimum 5.5 in all four components).

Middlesex also offers an (Pre-Sessional) that ranges from 5-17 weeks depending on your level of English. Successful completion of this course would meet English language entry requirements.

Entry into year two or three (transfer students)

If you have achieved a qualification such as a foundation degree or HND, or have gained credit at another university, you may be able to enter a Middlesex course in year two or three. For full details of how this works see .
