The ESGP's goal is the pursuit and dissemination of knowledge in the interdisciplinary field of environmental science. This field includes studies in ecotoxicology, environmental impact, population and community ecology, ecological modeling, regional ecology, paleoecology, water, soil and air pollution, resource depletion, toxic and hazardous wasters, fate and effects (on humans and other organisms) of environmental pollutants, global and regional changes caused by humans, ecological engineering, ecological and environmental economics, and aquatic, terrestrial and wetland systems. The program emphasizes basic research on ecological processes and effects, and applied research and teaching that will contribute to solving the world's pressing environmental problems.

Students may follow either of two programs, thesis (Plan A) or non-thesis (Plan B), No later than the fifth week of the second semester of enrollment in the Master's program, each student must submit an approved Program of Study to the Graduate Studies Committee. The advisor and all members of the student's committee must sign the Program of Study. ESGP offers considerable flexibility, enabling students, their advisors, and committee members to come up with a unique Program of Study. Included in the required number of credit hours for the degree ESGP students must choose one core course from each of three areas: Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences from the core course list. This list is subject to change as courses change. Also students must have two semesters of ESGP Seminar (1 credit each semester) to meet ESGP graduation requirements. Students are required to make a proposal presentation during the first year and an exit presentation at the Seminar the term before graduation is expected.
