The University of Leeds, School of Mechanical Engineering is seeking a talented candidate with a background in engineering, mathematics, physical sciences or computing for an exciting industrial PhD studentship in partnership with Merck Chemicals Limited.

Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDS) have revolutionalised display technology, and have useful properties such as mechanical flexibility that give them potential for much more development. This project sets out to develop modelling and predictive capabilities to enhance the manufacture of OLEDs via inkjet printing. The research will build on the sophisticated computational models of drop deposition and drying developed recently in Leeds as part of a wider industrial inkjet technology research programme, and will focus on modelling the behaviour of complex inks interacting with structured substrates, taking into account dynamic wetting behaviour, ink-environment interactions, and ink-surface interactions.

Contents

The project involves working closely with the industrial partner. In addition to the computational work conducted in Leeds, the student will also undertake substantial placements in the research laboratories at Merck Chemicals Ltd.

Funding

Value: This studentship, which is open to EU/UK students in the first instance, will pay the academic fees at the EU/UK rate (£3,975) as well as providing an annual stipend of approximately £13,863, plus a £3,000 top up.
