Our programme in Hazards and Disaster Management is ideal if you want to start or advance a career in hazard or risk management, environmental monitoring, emergency planning or catastrophe-related mitigation.

What will you study?

You will study the underpinning scientific principles of both:

* natural hazards (eg hurricanes, storms and tornadoes, flooding, landslides, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis and radon gas emissions); and
* human-induced disasters (eg terrorism, explosions and oil tanker accidents).

We also cover modern disaster management strategies and planning techniques for the mitigation (eg structural measures and education), preparation (eg early warning), response (eg search and rescue) and recovery (eg insurance) phases.

Alongside your academic studies, you will gain skills in:

* problem solving and organisation;
* data collation and evaluation;
* communication (oral, written and electronic);
* time and project management;
* computing; and
* co-operation and teamwork.

You can choose to study this course at MSc, PgDip or PgCert level to suit your background and ability.

The course provides a strong core element, covering modern methodologies for hazard assessment and disaster management for various hazard types.

The Hazards and Disaster Management course is open to both those entering direct from their undergraduate studies and those already in employment.Applicants must have one or more of the following: * a good honours degree awarded by a British or approved overseas university in a relevant subject such as Geography, Geology, Environmental Sciences, GIS or Earth Science or equivalent; * relevant non-certificated learning; or * an appropriate combination of certificated and non-certificated learning.Consideration is also given to non-standard entrants. All applicants are normally interviewed by the course director.International applicantsOverseas students whose first language is not English must have passed a recognised English language examination: * IELTS (British Council): overall score of 6.5 * TOEFL iBT: overall score of 100 with minimum 23/30 in reading/writing * TOEFL paper test: minimum score of 600 and TWE of 5 * TOEFL computer test: minimum score of 250 and TWE of 5 English Language Requirements CAE score: (read more) Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) is part of the Cambridge English suite and is targeted at a high level (IETLS 6.5-8.0).
