Description

This course will give you the skills required to pursue a career in emergency planning and management. You will examine theory and practice in a range of countries, comparing approaches in the UK with those in New Zealand, the USA, Australia and Canada.
You will develop the skills needed to manage the response to social emergencies (e.g. the Hillsborough football stadium disaster), technological incidents (e.g. the Buncefield oil storage depot explosion), major transport accidents and natural hazards (e.g. the recent earthquakes in New Zealand and Japan).
If you choose this course you will benefit from:

  • Excellent employment prospects in public, charitable and private organisations involved in emergency planning and management. Currently, 94% of our graduates from the department of Geography, Environment and Disaster Management find employment (or postgraduate level study opportunities) within 6 months of graduation*;
  • experienced teaching staff who bring professional and research expertise into their teaching;
  • the opportunity to apply to undertake a year of professional training with an emergency planning and management organisation. Professional training opportunities are available with local authorities, regional fire and police teams, utility companies, airport operators, Transport for London and oil spill response organisations;
  • residential courses at an outdoor education and training centre (Outreach) that specialises in training for the UK emergency services;
  • the opportunity to attend UK site visits and overseas field courses;
  • a range of training exercises and simulations which will develop your skills in responding to emergencies in ‘real life’ situations;
  • previous students have received undergraduate bursaries from and pursued a career with the British Armed Forces.

Course Content

In your first year you will develop an understanding of key concepts such as hazard, vulnerability and risk and, in addition, procedures in the command and control of emergency incidents.

In the second year you will study the human environment and identify how certain locations, communities or institutions are especially sensitive to the impact of disaster as a result of their precondition. You will also develop practical skills in methods for assessing vulnerability and risk, developing plans and managing emergency response.

In your final year you are encouraged to evaluate and critically analyse issues that face the emergency management profession in the UK and internationally. You will also have the opportunity to carry out an independent piece of research. Many students choose to base this on the work they were involved with during their professional training year.
