The MA in Health Care Ethics & Law programme aims to provide the highest quality of training in health care ethics and health care law in a flexible and interdisciplinary way.

There is an emphasis on the application of bioethical and legal theory to real world scenarios, thus catering to the practical needs of health care and legal professionals and those in related fields. Students gain an expert knowledge and understanding of bioethical and medico-legal theories, and the skills needed to apply them to real world scenarios in a diverse range of contexts.

Module details

Students will be required to complete three Core course units and three Options. The Core course units are:

* Philosophical Bioethics (30 credits)
* Medico-Legal Problems (30 credits)
* Ethico-Legal Problems in Health Care Practice (15 credits)

Students should choose their three Options from among the following (15 credit) course units, as available:

* Children Medicine and the Law
* Medicine, Law and Society
* Mental Health Law and Policy
* Rights I: The Concept of a Right and Theories of Rights
* Rights II: Rights and Dilemmas in Health Care
* Ethics and Genetics
* Research Ethics



Subject to availability, students have a free choice among the Options, with the exception that Rights I is a pre-requisite for enrolment in Rights II. Students take course units to a total of 120 credits. This credit total can be split in one of two ways: (1) 60 credits in each of the two semesters; or (2) 75 credits in semester one and 45 credits in semester two.

MA students must also successfully complete a dissertation by independent research of 12,000-15,000 words (60 credits), which is undertaken over the summer months of the programme (June-September).

Academic entry qualification overview: MA applicants must hold a minimum Upper Second class honours degree, or the overseas equivalent, in a relevant subject. Those applicants who do not satisfy the entry requirements for direct entry onto our MA programme may wish to be considered for entry onto the Postgraduate Diploma programme with a view to transferring to the MA programme mid-Session (subject to conditions).English language: Students whose first language is not English are required to hold IELTS 7.0, with a minimum writing score of 7, or TOEFL 623 paper based (with a minimum score on Test of Written English of 5.0) or 263 computer based, or Cambridge Certificate Grade C.International entry requirements: We accept a range of qualifications from different countries.
