HPC has become essential to many areas of science, engineering and industry. The MSc is directly relevant to careers in these sectors. Many branches of modern science, such as climate research and nanotechnology, rely on complex computer models which can only be run on parallel supercomputers. Companies involved in areas such as aerospace and automotive engineering, oil exploration, drug design and genetic sequencing all run computer models on HPC systems. HPC techniques are now essential for any software developer who wants to take full advantage of modern multicore CPUs, graphics processors and computing clusters.

EPCC The MSc in High Performance Computing (HPC) is based in EPCC, an institute within the School of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh. EPCC has an international reputation as a leading centre of expertise in high-performance, parallel and distributed computing. EPCC operates Students are taught by EPCC staff who also work on This well-established MSc provides an excellent grounding in HPC technologies and their practical application. It will appeal to students who already have a keen interest in programming and would like to learn about HPC and parallel programming.

Taught courses The MSc in HPC has a strong practical focus and our taught courses include lectures supported by practical tutorials. The seven compulsory courses give a broad-based coverage of the fundamentals of HPC and parallel computing, while the optional courses focus on specialist areas relevant to computational science. The courses are assessed through a combination of coursework and examination.

Compulsory courses * HPC Architectures
* Message-Passing Programming
* Programming Skills
* Threaded Programming
* HPC Ecosystem
* Software Development
* Project Preparation

Optional courses * Parallel Numerical Algorithms
* Parallel Programming Languages
* Advanced Parallel Programming
* Parallel Design Patterns
* Performance Programming

Selected courses from the other MSc programmes in Computer Science, Informatics, Mathematics and Physics at the University are also available as optional courses.

Minimum entry requirements To apply for the MSc in HPC, you will normally require a UK 2:1 or its international equivalent in computer science, physics, informatics, mathematics, engineering or chemistry and experience in computer programming (see below). Applicants who have equivalent work experience may also be considered. Programming languages No prior HPC knowledge is assumed, but you should have experience in programming and must be a competent programmer, preferably in C, C++, Fortran or Java. International students All international applicants must meet our general entry and English Language Requirements English Language Requirements CAE score: (read more) Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) is part of the Cambridge English suite and is targeted at a high level (IETLS 6.5-8.0). It is an international English language exam set at the right level for academic and professional success. Developed by Cambridge English Language Assessment - part of the University of Cambridge - it helps you stand out from the crowd as a high achiever. 80 (Grade A)
