The Master's Degree in Hispanic Studies: Applications and Research aims to prepare professionals and researchers in all the activities related to the Spanish Language, Literature and Performing Arts which, within different profiles (advanced academic skills, research training or training for specific applications in the workplace) ensure a high level education and training in Hispanic studies.

The Master's degree in Spanish advanced studies: applications and research has as general objectives:

  • To provide students with the knowledge and tools needed to develop the capacity of intervening socially in the preservation and diffusion of the Spanish cultural heritage (linguistic and/or literary or theatrical) as an identity value, promoting their knowledge.
  • To provide the graduates an advanced training aimed at the specialisation in the field of Spanish language and/or literature and theatre.
  • To provide the students the tools and knowledge necessary for the development of creative, critical, analysis and synthesis capacities to consider and make original judgements on issues related to Spanish language and/or literature and theatre and transmit them to different audiences. 
  • To provide the students the tools and knowledge necessary for developing the ability to conceive and carry out a research / project in the field of study of the Master's.

The Master’s is aimed at university graduates interested in further training in the Spanish language and its literature, within different profiles (advanced academic knowledge, research training and training for specific applications in the workplace).

The recommended applicant profile includes students from the areas of knowledge of Humanities and Social Sciences who have completed an undergraduate degree, a licenciatura or an official master's degree. The related areas of knowledge are: Philology and Language Studies, Humanities, Audiovisual Communication, Information Sciences, History, Fine Arts, Anthropology, Sociology and Philosophy.

This Master’s is also aimed at professionals from the sectors of culture, publishing, public administration or tourism, regardless of their prior university education, when the curriculum or professional and research activities of the applicants is, in the judgment of the Academic Coordinating Committee of the Master’s, related to the contents and objectives of the Master’s, as long as the applicants hold a university degree.

The selection of students will be based on the following criteria:

• Degree, considering the affinity of the educational profile of the student to the specialty of the Master’s degree
• Average mark of the academic record
• Collaboration grants
• Curriculum vitae
• Knowledge of languages
• Cover letter
• Previous work experience
• Additional training and education in the area of study of the Master’s.

These will be weighted as follows:

50%: title and transcripts
15%: research experience
15%: experience
20%: other merits (grants, contributions, other degrees, cover letters)

On a general basis, official master’s degrees are open to holders of any of the following qualifications:

  • Official Spanish university degree
  • Foreign higher education degree officially recognised as equivalent to an official Spanish university degree
  • Degree awarded by a higher education institution that is part of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) which allows access to official master’s degree courses in the country in which it was awarded
  • Degree awarded by a higher education institution that is not part of the EHEA. In this case, access is conditional upon the verification that the course of study completed corresponds to a level of education equivalent to an official Spanish university degree and that the qualification obtained would provide admission to an official master’s degree in the country of award. Admission following this process under no circumstances implies the official recognition of the degree or its acceptance for any other purpose except admission to the master’s degree course. The process of verification of equivalence of foreign qualifications is subject to a fee payable at the time of submission of the online pre-enrolment form which amounts to €155.22.
