This is an exciting opportunity to study key philosophers in the European tradition, and to examine fundamental problems, such as the nature of time, the human, knowledge, ethical and political practice, and history. This course will be suitable for those with a first degree in philosophy, or in a cognate discipline. It can serve as a bridge to doctoral studies, at Staffordshire or elsewhere; or simply to satisfy your interest in the subject
The programme is designed to open up the full breadth of continental philosophy, from Kant, through Nietzsche and Heidegger, to Bachelard and Foucault.

The degree will run entirely by distance learning. A suite of internet-based resources will be provided (lectures, notes, readings, and the electronic resources of the Staffordshire University library). There will also be a discussion forum in which students can exchange and debate ideas not only with the tutors and fellow students, but also with leading academics from around the world who will participate as virtual visiting speakers.

This course is available either full or part-time.

We also offer the PhD, by on-campus study or distance learning.

The degree course is organised around four required taught modules:

  • Transcendence and the Body (Kant and Nietzsche)
  • Phenomenology and Ontology (Heidegger and after)
  • Knowledge and Politics
  • Research Seminar (variable theme to match current activity in the Department)

In addition, students will prepare a dissertation: a supervised research project of circa 15,000 words.

Good quality first degree in philosophy, or a cognate subject (such as English, history, etc.). English Language Requirements IELTS band: 7 Technological Requirements You will need an internet connection, and use of up to date internet browser and word processing software.
