Lund University´s Master of Science in International Development and Management (LUMID) is a 2-year interdisciplinary and international programme for students who wish to further a career in international development cooperation or to pursue an academic career in that field. Every year 40 students get selected from of a pool of around 1000 applicants, which provides for a student body of dedicated, ambitious and talented students from all around the world.

The programme is truly interdisciplinary and offers courses in the four areas of social sciences and economics, science and environment, health and management. Another feature of LUMID is the combination of theoretical and applied knowledge.

During the second year, students spend one semester in a developing country of their choice where they - affiliated to a development organisation - apply the theoretical knowledge gained during the first year of the programme to a real-life setting. During the field placement they also take courses in programme management and undertake fieldwork and gather data for their final thesis. The fourth and last semester of the programme is devoted to writing a Master s thesis, which allows for deepening and specialising in a particular topic within the field of development studies.

The interdisciplinary and field-based approach characterising the LUMID programme qualifies LUMID for being associated members of the Global Association for Master s in Development Practice (MDP). LUMID especially encourages applicants within three broad subject backgrounds: engineering/natural sciences, health/medicine and the social sciences (including economics). In the selection process, special attention is paid to: - Academic merits - Statement of Purpose - Previous work experience and CV.

LUMID welcomes applicants from a variety of academic disciplines and countries. LUMID is hosted by the Department of Human Geography at Lund University, but takes an interdisciplinary approach. This is accomplished through teachers teams recruited from a number of faculties.

Applied knowledge and critical thinking
LUMID focuses on two major types of learning: learning by doing and critical, academic thinking based on empirical investigation. To achieve this, the first year courses on campus are matched by field based courses during the second year. The combination of academic and applied knowledge is an essential component of the program. The programme comprises a total of 120 credits divided among nine courses. LUMID runs over two years.

The field based methods course is carried out in a developing country, with a focus on qualitative methods. During this course students collect data for their theses. The writing of the thesis may be carried out either in Sweden or elsewhere.
