The fortunes of one country are now closely intertwined with those of other nations. Increasingly it is necessary to study and evaluate politics and policies at an international level. This programme allows you to combine your interest in international relations with the study of political theory and the national politics of a variety of countries.
About the department
The Department of Political Science and International Studies, which teaches this programme, is one of the largest and best departments of its type in the UK. It came fifth in the 2009 National Student Survey in terms of overall satisfaction and 85% of the research conducted in POLSIS was evaluated as being internationally recognised in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. Department has an excellent record in the Guardian League Table for Politics. We are currently rated 12th and have been consistently viewed as one of the best departments in the country since the Guardian started publishing their League Tables in 2000.
The Department has a balance of expertise that covers all areas of the discipline and has long-established strengths in the fields of political theory, European politics, international relations theory, security studies, diplomatic studies, political sociology, political economy, Pacific Asian politics, environmental politics and British politics.

Course Content
First year
In this year you take foundation modules in international relations and diplomatic history, as well as an optional module.
Second year
You build upon this foundation in the second year. An outstanding feature of the programme is the wide range of options available, as well as the interdisciplinary nature of the course.
Third year
In addition to choosing modules from a wide range of options, you have the opportunity to specialise in areas of particular interest.
Teaching and assessment
The course is assessed via a range of methods including essays, presentations, exams and a dissertation on a subject of your own choice.
