Jazz at Hanze University of Applied Sciences offers a comprehensive and dynamic bachelor's degree program designed for aspiring jazz musicians who aim to excel in both performance and musical understanding. The program emphasizes a practical, hands-on approach to learning, combining individual instruction with ensemble work, improvisation, music theory, and contemporary jazz techniques. Students have the opportunity to develop their unique artistic voice while gaining essential skills in musicianship, stage presence, and audience engagement.

The curriculum covers a wide range of subjects, including jazz history, harmony, arrangement, and improvisation, along with practical modules such as performing in various ensembles and solo projects. State-of-the-art facilities, including dedicated rehearsal rooms, recording studios, and performance venues, create an inspiring environment conducive to creative development. Throughout the program, students participate in numerous concerts, workshops, and master classes led by renowned jazz artists and educators, providing valuable industry insights and networking opportunities.

Hanze University of Applied Sciences also emphasizes the importance of versatility and adaptability in today’s music scene. Students are encouraged to explore different styles and cross-genre collaborations, broadening their artistic horizons and enhancing their employability. The program prepares graduates for diverse careers in music, such as performing, teaching, composing, arranging, and producing.

Supportive faculty members with extensive professional experience guide students through their artistic journey while fostering a collaborative and innovative learning atmosphere. The program's overarching goal is to cultivate well-rounded jazz musicians who possess both technical mastery and artistic originality. Graduates leave equipped with the confidence and skills necessary to thrive in the competitive world of jazz music, whether on stage, in the studio, or as independent artists.

You start performing publicly from day one. The emphasis is in expanding your stage experience. You will also learn to play the piano in order to understand musical theory better. You will participate in studio projects and you will follow courses in jazz arranging and composition. Your main instrument and the New York faculty classes are the focus throughout your entire study programme. In addition to your private lessons, you will play in various ensembles. We also organise a trip to New York every year. The didactical subjects and musical entrepreneurship are offered in the second and third year. At the end of the fourth year you will complete your studies with a final concert, displaying the musical vision that you have developed. We have no limitations in terms of instruments. Basically every instrument is admissible.

Applicants for programmes at the conservatoire are expected to be familiar with certain materials and skills. Therefore, all applicants must perform at the entrance exams, held in May and June of every year. This exam consists of two parts: a theory or aural test, and an audition. Each part is approximately 30 minutes long and both take place on the same day. The results are most likely to be presented the same day. In special cases it is possible to send in a DVD instead of doing an audition.

Skype audition for non-European students

You also have the possibility to do a DVD audition. Your DVD audition will be followed by a Skype audition. The content of the Skype audition will be based on the DVD. Your admissibility will be based on your two auditions.

Tuition Fees 2018-2019

  • EU/EEA students: € 2,060
  • Non-EU/EEA students: € 7,700

Career prospects

Graduates are trained to be professional musicians and are equipped for a musical career, performing in various ensembles, in all styles of jazz. You will know how to promote yourself and your group. You will be able to compose and arrange music for all kinds of ensembles and  orchestras. You will start teaching others at a music school or privately. Most graduates are self-employed, pursuing ‘portfolio careers’ that combine performance with teaching.
