Description

This course prepares students for a wide range of rewarding careers in law and related professions.

This desirable LLB (Hons) develops extensive knowledge and skills relevant to business and the legal profession.

If you’re aiming to be a solicitor or a barrister, the course meets the requirements of being a Qualifying Law Degree (QLD) provided for by the professional law bodies. Students who choose this route and satisfy the relevant professional regulations can progress directly to the vocational stage of training to become a solicitor or barrister.

If you’re looking to pursue a different career path, this flexible course enables you to plan for careers in related areas such as criminology, social law or commercial law. So whether you’re interested in obtaining the Qualifying Law Degree or in following another career route, the LLB (Hons) is ideal preparation.

Key elements include:

  • Client briefs, and ‘live’ legal exercises
  • Study of key areas of law, understanding legal problems, applying the law to find possible solutions
  • Development of legal skills, including research, analysis, legal literacy and effective communication
  • Active learning through social networks and business simulation
  • Lectures and small groups to help you develop learning and understanding
  • Well-designed assessments with a good balance between coursework and exams
  • Career planning and personal development
  • Expert teaching team, many with legal backgrounds, able to use first-hand practical examples to bring theory to life
  • Emphasis on student comments and feedback to ensure the course is working effectively
  • Contemporary learning resources.

Industrial focus

As a law student, you’ll build contacts and insight through the Southampton City Law Network. Set up by the University to promote the interests of local law students, law teachers, lawyers and other professionals, the Network holds regular events and ensures up-to-date teaching, learning and professional knowledge.

Employability is at the heart of this course and students have a range of opportunities to put their learning into practice. Our exciting mooting programme includes a moot court room where students practice their knowledge and legal skills.

Students are able to hold mooting competitions and apply their legal skills in research, argument and presentations. Also, the course is designed with a flexible route providing you with additional opportunities to pursue personal and professional development.

Following graduation, many students proceed to the vocational stage of legal training, either the Legal Practice Course towards becoming a solicitor, or the Bar Professional Training Course for those wishing to progress to a career as a barrister. A significant number of law students pursue careers in business, finance, compliance, the police service and paralegal work.
