Starting in September 2013, this specialisation offers you an opportunity to concentrate on the different aspects of the languages of China, especially their sounds and syntax.

Chinese Linguistics is a lively and ever growing field, with a large number of active participants, both inside and outside China. This programme brings you up to date with respect to the most recent developments in part of this area of linguistics. Leiden is one of the few universities outside Asia with four Chinese linguists among their permanent faculty. As such it is in a unique position to offer an MA programme in Chinese linguistics. True to the general character of the linguistics programmes in Leiden, the focus of the Chinese linguistics specialisation is on language variation: in all courses we look beyond Mandarin, both diachronically and synchronically. Courses offered cover the phonetic-phonology aspect as well as the syntactic aspect of the different languages of China.
