The School of Managements PhD programme has been awarded +3 recognition for full-time students by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and has also received research studentships from ESRC and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) for its doctoral programme.

We provide supervision across a broad range of topics, including

As a research student you will be registered initially for the MPhil degree and are then transferred to PhD after a period of satisfactory progress. Minimum registration periods are: one year for the MPhil (two years part-time); two years for the PhD (three years part-time). In practice you should expect to spend at least one more year of study than these minimum periods. You will normally be required to attend designated Research Training Courses within the School of Management and elsewhere at the University. The School also supports research students to attend and present their work at international conferences.

Requirements

The normal minimum entrance requirement is:

* A Masters degree from a UK university or equivalent overseas/professional qualification in an appropriate subject;
* Quality of your research proposal, and
* Support from your prospective supervisor.

Language Requirements Applicants whose first language is not English and do not have a degree from a UK university will be required to provide evidence of competency in English by reaching an appropriate standard in an approved text such as IELTS, TOEFL and the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (grades A-C) or the Certificate in Advance English (grades A or B).

* IELTS Overall score 6.5 or above and all sections scores 6 or above.
* TOEFL (paper based test) Overall score 580 or above and all sections scores 55 or above.
* TOEFL iBT (Internet-based test) Overall score 92 or above and all section scores 21 or above.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Since April 2014 the ETS tests (including TOEFL and TOEIC) are no longer accepted for Tier 4 visa applications to the United Kingdom. The university might still accept these tests to admit you to the university, but if you require a Tier 4 visa to enter the UK and begin your degree programme, these tests will not be sufficient to obtain your Visa.

Funding

The University of Southamptons School of Management is internationally recognised as one of the UKs leading centres for management education and research.

The School will be offering a small number of PhD Scholarships for full-time entry on 29 September 2011.

We will consider applications to undertake research in any area of: Accounting, Accountability and Governance, Banking, Corporate Social Responsibility, Entrepreneurship, Financial Markets, Health Management, Human Resources, Information Technology/Systems, Innovation, Management Science, Marketing, Organisational Behaviour, Organisational Research, Risk, Supply Chain Management, and Strategy.

One of the scholarships will specifically be awarded for the area of "Quantitative management science/operational research", involving research in green logistics and transport, healthcare, optimization and heuristics.

The supporting documents required are:
* a full research proposal
* two academic references
* certified copies of degree certificates
* transcripts and an English language certificate (if appropriate).

The criteria for the Scholarship are:
* Academic excellence
* Research potential (a well written research proposal will support this)

All completed applications, including all supporting documents, received by 1st April 2011 will be considered for the scholarships.
