Mathematical analysis developed for some purpose can often be applied to a variety of problems. There are constantly new developments, whether in pure or applied mathematics. The two-year Master's programme Mathematics reflects the versatility of this science. It provides you with an opportunity to specialize while deepening your knowledge of the subject in general. VU University Amsterdam offers a wide variety of research topics in the field of mathematics ranging from probability theory, operations research and statistics via analysis to topology and K-theory. Examples of current research topics include: Percolation theory, Stochastic modelling and statistical analysis of biological processes, Queuing theory, Blowup phenomena in partial differential equations, Braids in dynamics, Homotopy theory of classifying spaces, Algebraic K-theory. The Master's programme in Mathematics consists of specialized courses, optional courses and a Master's project. Students can choose to follow the programme with an emphasis on research, on communication and education skills or on application-oriented skills.
