The Mechanical Engineering Program stresses the role of mechanical engineers in planning, creating devices and systems, and skilful management of projects. Emphasis is placed on the generation, conversion, transmission and utilization of mechanical and thermal energy including the design, manufacturing, and operation of the related mechanical devices. The theme of education sharpens skills in communication, teamwork, and usage of computers and information technology. Specific humanity concerns are also highlighted. The mechanical engineer should strive both to serve the needs of society without unduly damaging the environment, and to produce devices and systems that use energy and material resources efficiently. Mechanical Engineering program covers the standard fundamental courses and then focuses on the following fields:
- Gas and energy systems
- Materials and manufacturing engineering
- Design and maintenance engineering
- Mechatronics and automation
The gas and energy field prepares the student with the fundamentals of energy conversion from one type to another, as well as its transmission and utilization along with its environmental impact. The materials and manufacturing engineering field provides the background an engineer needs to select the optimum material for a given application, to control the quality of products, and to suggest ways of eliminating difficulties that may obstruct production. The design and maintenance engineering field integrates elements of the mechanical engineering program and utilizes modern computer methods to enable the engineer to execute the complete product design cycle from concept to disposal.
