Microsystems Engineering

Microsystems, MEMS, or micromachines: many names for an exciting and dynamic engineering discipline which combines expertise from areas as diverse as electrical engineering, biology, manufacturing technology and chemistry and thus allows engineers to conceive highly miniaturised, multi-functional systems used for medical and diagnostic purposes, in communication and information systems as well as in the automotive industry. 

Description of the Degree Programme

MSE ins an interdisciplinary programme that builds on a basic knowledge in electrical and mechanical engineering. Although from the third semester on students can speicalise in two of the seven concentration areas, in the first year they have compulsory courses in all areas which play a role in microsystems engineering (such as micro-electronics, -mechanics, -fluidics, -optics and more).

In the first year 12 mandatory courses provide the fundamental theoretical framework for a future career in Microsystems. 

In the second year, MSE students can specialise in two of the following seven concentration areas (elective courses), allowing each student to realize individual interests and to obtain an in-depth look at two sub-disciplines of this very broad, interdisciplinary field:

• Circuits and systems
• Design and simulation
• Life sciences: Biomedical engineering
• Life sciences: Lab-on-a-chip
• Materials
• Process engineering
• Sensors and actuators

Academic and Language Pre-requisites

• Bachelor's degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical or Electronics Engineering (or equivalent), undergraduate knowledge in mathematics, physics, chemistry, technical mechanics, electronics and materials.
• Very good English language proficiency (IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 92)
