Combining taught elements with an emphasis on research and independent study, this programme will suit those wishing to pursue their interest in a specific field for its own sake, those seeking to develop advanced research and analytical skills for career purposes and those who hope to progress to a PhD. You will be introduced to a range of themes and interdisciplinary approaches in semester one before completing a series of assessed tasks intended to prepare you for dissertation research.

This MRes is an interdisciplinary programme which will allow you to pursue research in areas such as cultural studies, literature, history, sociolinguistics and ethnography. The MRes combines taught elements with an emphasis on research and independent study. A double module on research skills will allow you to develop general research skills in the first semester and dissertation skills in the second. A double core module in your chosen pathway will introduce you to a range of themes and approaches in French, German, Spanish or Portuguese studies and allow you to practise the skills essential for dissertation work. With the support and guidance of your supervisor, you will then be able to define an appropriate research topic and complete your dissertation.

Two core modules are to be studied during each of the first and second semesters: Research Skills; New Directions French, German, Spanish and Portuguese studies.
