To provide instruction in current concepts and techniques of molecular genetics as applied in modern research. The course offers practical experience of experimental techniques and provides a framework to develop your skills to plan research and devise strategies to achieve specific goals.

The course is suitable for students who want employment in molecular or biomedical research or the biotechnological and pharmaceutical industries. The course is also an excellent preparation for entry to PhD programmes.

Teaching and assessment methods
Continuous assessment is a major element of the course. Written assignments are used to assess a students analysis and understanding of the taught practical modules and there are two examinations. Assessment of the laboratory research project contributes two-thirds of course credits, and is based on performance in the laboratory, a written report and research seminar.

Course modules
The laboratory course comprises taught practical modules that introduce a variety of modern molecular techniques and research strategies, supported by a lecture programme. Students then undertake a seven-month research project chosen from a broad range offered by Departments of the College of Medicine, Biological Sciences and Psychology, the MRC Toxicology Unit, or collaborating research institutes or industrial partners (when available). The spread of projects covers a wide variety of disciplines involving molecular genetics and a variety of organisms.
