The place of audio-visual information keeps growing in our environment. Smartphones, tablets, or augmented reality glasses equipped with cameras and more and more efficient displays allow users to send and receive large amounts of information via wireless networks, to share content on social networks, or to receive geographically connoted information. Moreover, the emergence of new multimedia formats (3D, Multi-view plus depth, holographic formats, Ultra High Definition, High Dynamic Range) open new challenges for an efficient and reliable transmission of such contents. Within the Ile-de-France region, Multimedia Networking has no equivalent for what concerns such research-oriented curriculums. It differs from other research programs by the importance it gives to the emerging multimedia contents transmitted by the networks, to compression and coding systems for these contents, and to end-to-end architectures for conveying them.
