Description

Our goal is to impart a classical music education using modern teaching methods. The curriculum is especially designed to allow the prospective student be able to construct a more flexible study plan that can be geared to more personal career outcomes. Our desire is to have our students be representative of the best that Turkey has to offer.

Yasar University’s Music Department, part of the Fine Arts Faculty, opened in the 2008–2009 academic year. It is the first private music school in the system of Foundation Universities in the city of Izmir. Internationally recognized performers and teachers assure the highest of academic standards. The school boasts the latest in technology and supports a fine University Chamber Orchestra.

In having an internationally acclaimed faculty, our goal is to graduate students that will be able to undertake musical careers in any part of the world. The University Chamber Orchetra affords each student the chance to play both as an orchestral and solo musician. Because of our technological means, students will have their concerts recorded and broadcast via a number of media (TV, radio, and the internet). This will allow them to build a real work experience while studying.

Music Department Orientation

Introduction for our Students.

We, as teachers, are here to help you with any of your problems but it is up to you to make you studies worth the diploma. You will only know the worth of your diploma when you try to continue to graduate studies or apply for a job. If you really did what your diploma says you did then your chances of success will be greater. If you did not, you will be holding a worthless piece of paper that will not allow you to continue to achieve what you would like to achieve. We were all young and we know what that means. Your diploma is not a piece of paper but a life lesson. Try to get as much out of it as you possibly can NOW. The world of graduate studies and the job market are getting more difficult and competitive by the year. I know that it was easier for me to get where I got than it will be for you in the furure. That is why I am telling you to work hard. Have as much fun as you wish but make sure you do your work with all your intensity, passion and will.

Degree Formation

At Yasar University every student is afforded the unique chance of changing their study plan after the completion of their second year, should the student discover that their original study plan does not suite their professional formation. This allows the student to switch, for example, from a performance major to a music buisness major. For any such changes please be sure to speak with your area co-ordinator to discuss any such changes.

Music School Requirements

Prep School Students (Hazrlk) must attend all their Vocal or Instrumental classes as well as their Solfege lectures.

Every student will be required to perform at least once a semester in their respective Studio performance evenings.

There will also be mandatory chamber music concerts every semester.

Anyone who wishes to undertake voluntary performances must inform their area co- ordinator so that he or she may book the auditorium in a timely fashion

You will be required to attend 10 concerts per semester and provide proof of attendence (eg. a ticket or program) and will have to write a short critique of the concert. These will have to be given to your department co-ordinators. If you do not meet this requirement it will have a most negative effect . Please note If you show your Yasar Student ID you will be let into Adnan Saygun Symphony Concerts (with a few exceptions) free of charge.

Theory and Solfege

Attendence

Will be taken at beginning of class so that if you are late you will be absent.

If you do not attend 80% of your classes YOU WLL FAL THE COURSE

For Example: Theory is 3 x a week for a total of 14 x 3 = 42 lessons

80% of 42 is 34 lessons.

Homework

Will be handed in at requested time. Late homework will not be gradede and will receive a grade of 0%

History of Music

The Lectures will be in English but your history notes and your text book will be in Turkish. I will make the Exams in both English and Turkish. Easy questions in English and more difficult ones in Turkish. You will find that you will have to learn many foreign words because there are no Turkish equivalents for those terms.

Language. Please understand that the more I do in Turkish, the more I am not helping you. At Yasar you are given an opportunity that is not available in most schools around the world. That is the change to learn the worlds most spoken language English. You will find that most literature for any subject is written in

English. Learn it not because we say you must but because the whole world now does everything in English. For now, even the Chinese learn English.

Erasmus

There are two Erasmus projects available to our students.

1) Students Exchange Program. This is a program in which an undergraduate or graduate student may be eligible to go and study for either one semester or a whole year at a European University or Conservatory. For this kind of project the student must pass an Erasmus English test given at Yasar University and must have been accepted by the host teacher via an audition (either DVD or CD). The credits you receive at the foreign school are all transferable to your Yasar University degree requirements.

2) I.P. (Intensive Project) This is a two week learning program in which a small number of students are selected to represent the Yasar Music Department at a European University or Conservatory. The selection is made on a neccessity basis i.e., if singers are required then the co-ordinator will choose voice students. While a knowledge of English is favoured, the student does not have to pass an English test. Ususally, these Intensive Projects are worth 3 credits which count toward your degree credit requirements.

For any and all questions related to the Erasmus projects, please make sure to speak to Payam Susanni. She is the Erasmus co-ordinator for our music department.
