The programme aims to facilitate the artistic, intellectual and creative development of each student and to equip them with the range of skills necessary to meet the constantly changing and ever increasing demands made on the professional musician in the twenty-first century.

Based in the Conservatory of Music and Drama which has a long tradition in the provision of performing arts education, the programme aims to facilitate the artistic, intellectual and creative development of students by providing integrated, structured and performance experience in a wide range of solo and ensemble contexts, underpinned by complementary academic and supporting professional studies.

The programme aims to provide a postgraduate qualification in performance for:

* applicants who have already completed an undergraduate degree in music with a high level of performance and aspire towards a professional career in performance
* applicants who have professional performing experience and wish to pursue further study in their chosen area

Aims:

* to provide students with the necessary musical training and performance experience in a wide range of solo and ensemble contexts to enable them to meet the demands of the performing profession at the highest levels
* to integrate professional level performance studies with the development of analytical and research skills, with particular emphasis on performance practice
* to provide a programme of study tailored to the needs of the individual student, with supporting specialist modules of professional relevance
* to facilitate the artistic, intellectual and creative development of the individual student

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the programme the student should be able to:

* demonstrate a professional level of performance (in solo and ensemble contexts) which reveals an awareness of the artistic and interpretative demands of the repertoire, and communicates an individual musical personality
* demonstrate an understanding of issues related to performance practice in their chosen instrument/voice through critical analysis/research
* demonstrate and apply knowledge and understanding in specialist modules of professional relevance
* demonstrate the necessary artistic, intellectual and creative ability to perform successfully in the music profession

The Master of Music (Performance) programme is proposed as a one-year full time (12-month) or 2-year part-time (24-month) taught programme leading to the award of MMus (Performance).
The Postgraduate Diploma in Music (Performance) programme is proposed as a one-year full-time (12-month) or 2-year part-time (24-month) taught programme leading to the award of PgDip (Performance).

Successful completion of all 3 modules and 90 ECTS credits (Lecture Recital, Major Recital and Research Project) leads to the award of MMus (Performance). Successful completion of 2 modules and 60 ECTS credits (Lecture Recital and Major Recital) leads to the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Music (Performance).

(B) POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN MUSIC (PERFORMANCE)The Postgraduate Diploma in Music (Performance) programme is proposed as a one-year full-time (12 month) or 2-year part-time (24-month) taught programme leading to the award of PGDip(Performance).
There are two components for this programme:

MAJOR RECITAL
LECTURE RECITALThe Lecture/Recital aims to develop students critical and analytical skills further, particularly in the area of performance practice and to equip them with the research skills necessary to be effective researching performers.
The Analysis and Performance Practice modules are seen to underpin the professional training in performance with the development of:
analytical and research skills with particular emphasis on issues relating to performance practice
MAJOR RECITAL Performance is at the centre of the programme and the performance components are designed to provide students with the training and experience necessary to enable them to meet the demands of the performing profession at the highest levels. The intensive practical training culminates in the Major Recital.

The Supporting Professional Studies modules are seen to underpin the professional training in performance with the development of:

extra musical skills relating specifically to the music industry in the twenty-first century and including issues relating to business and finance, promotion and publicity, and the personal communication and presentation skills necessary for the performer who may find employment in various community-based contexts outside of the traditional performance arena

RESEARCHThe Research Project, which only applies to students of the MASTER OF MUSIC (Performance) course, will be submitted in September of either year. Research Methodology classes and Research Supervision assist students in the preparation of their research projects.

Applicants should normally have an undergraduate degree in music with a specialisation in performance. Applicants with equivalent professional experience are also invited to apply. Selection will be by audition and interview.Note: Due to the considerable competition for our postgraduate programmes satisfying the minimum entry requirement is not a guarantee of a place. Depending on the programme of study applications will be assessed based on your academic grades and may also take into account your work/life experience. Applicants may also be required to attend for interview for specific programmes.
