Description

Glasgow Caledonian University is one of the largest nursing education providers in the country. With a fully-equipped simulated ward area on campus and close to Scotland's leading hospitals, studying at GCU gives you access to excellent facilities.

The Bachelor of Nursing programme will help you to build both theoretical and clinical experience, specialising in one of four fields: adult, child, learning disability or mental health nursing.

Adult Nursing is a varied career. You'll learn how to care for old and young adults with different health conditions. Some of the skills you'll gain include caring, counselling, managing and teaching and how to juggle your many responsibilities.

You'll also learn how to improve the quality of patients' lives, sometimes in difficult situations, and will spend 50% of the course gaining practical experience in various clinical placements - from Accident and Emergency to people's own hoes.

Adult Nursing graduates go on to a wide range of positions in the NHS, including community staff nurse posts.

Children's Nursing. This programme is designed to give you the skills and knowledge to care for children and young people.

Learning will take place within the University and in a variety of practice settings, including both hospital and community. Most practice learning experiences will be within the Greater Glasgow area but there are also opportunities elsewhere in Scotland.

You will learn to work as part of a team with children aged from newborn to adolescents, their families, carers and allied health professionals.

Learning Disability Nursing involves working with other professions and agencies to enhance the independence, health and equality of life of people with learning disabilities through inclusive and person-centred practice.

Most practice learning experiences will be within the Greater Glasgow area but there are also opportunities elsewhere in Scotland.

Graduates can go on to work in the NHS and third sector services in In-Patient Assessment and Treatment Units, Community Learning Disability Teams, hospital liaison services, Forensic services, services for people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Epilepsy services, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services.

Mental Health Nursinginvolves supporting people who are finding it difficult to cope with aspects of their life, and helping them have wellbeing and independence.

Mental health nurses work in a range of settings including hospitals, day services and people's homes. This programme enables study with other student groups such as Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Radiologists and Social Workers.

As well as clinical posts such as staff nurse or charge nurse, careers can include management posts such as lead nurse or senior nurse, or specialist roles such as specialist clinical practitioner, academic researcher and nurse consultant.
