Deakin University was formally established in 1974 with the Deakin University Act 1974. It was the fourth university in Victoria and the first to have a regional campus.
Teaching began at Deakin in 1977 but it was not until May 11, 1978, that the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus officially opened. Deakin’s reputation as a strong off-campus educator is reinforced by the delivery of almost 1500 items to students in less than 48 hours. Within a year the University is Australia's largest academic publisher.
1979 - Australia’s first 'open' university experiment is an instant success. Off-campus student numbers almost double from 1250 to 2120 heralding a new era in long distance study.
Deakin has been strengthened by a series of successful mergers with strong partners, each of whom has contributed significantly to our character and approach.
In 2014 Deakin celebrated its 40th anniversary.
Today, Deakin operates in a global, connected world with the digital economy influencing every aspect of our activities.
