On this programme, we train high calibre graduates with all the necessary skills and expertise. As a graduage of GCU, you will have a great prepartion for an exciting, fast-moving career in the UK or abroad.

The programme involves 50% theory and 50% practice. It uses a variety of educational approaches, from problem-based learning to a state-of-the-art facility that simulates being on a ward.

To meet the requirements for Registration as a nurse, the programme runs for 45 weeks per year. Clinical experience takes place at intervals throughout the first three years of the programme, and as part of the programme, you will register with the NMC Professional Register. International links mean that students may be able to spend a clinical placement in countries such as Sweden, Australia or Canada.

Graduate opportunities include working in hospitals, residential settings and the wider community. Graduates can also expect to continue learning throughout their career - something that's important for the whole profession. Previous graduates from this programme include nurse consultants, senior managers and academic leaders.

Course Content

Year 1: Introduction to Adult Nursing, Life Sciences, Psychology, Sociology, Interprofessional Education and Practice Learning Experience.

Year 2: Nursing Studies, Perspectives of Health & Wellbeing, Research in Health and Social Care Practice and Practice Learning Experience.

Year 3: Nursing Studies subjects include Decision Making, Global Health, Investigating Effective Practice, The Art of Nursing, Developing Culturally Sensitive Care, 2 optional modules and Practice Learning Experience.

Year 4: Honours Level Dissertation, Organisations, Policy and Professional Practice, Nursing Theory and Practice Learning Experiences.

Work placement: Clinical experience is linked to theory and takes place at intervals throughout the four years of the programme.

Assessment: A variety of assessment methods are used including formal examinations, class tests, video and poster presentations. Your nursing skills will be assessed in the University and during clinical placement.

Requirements

Higher: BBBB/BBBCC, A Level: BCC, ILC: B2 in 4 subjects.

Essential subjects: English (Higher/GCSE/ILC-H), a science subject (Higher/A Level/ILC-H), Chemistry and Mathematics (S Grade 3/GCSE/ILC-O). Applicants will be required to attend an information session in accordance with guidance set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Recommended subjects: Biology or Human Biology (Higher/A Level/GCSE/ILC-O).

Accreditation

At the end of Year 4, students who successfully complete the programme will be eligible for registration as a Registered Nurse - Adult Nursing (RN1) with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
