Philosophy and Politics is a BA Honours degree offered by the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. It allows students to develop an understanding key theories and ideas in both philosophy and politics, together with an engagement in current social, political and ethical issues in both global and national arenas.

The philosophy component of the programme allows students to specialise in key areas of the discipline, including critical thinking and rhetoric; ethics; political philosophy; philosophy of mind; religion; theory of knowledge; philosophy of education, philosophy of madness, and other issues in classical and contemporary philosophy. The politics component covers the study of international and comparative politics, government, citizenship and political theory.

In the final year, students may be offered a work placement in regional or local politics, or within one of the many interest and pressure groups based in London, or even in the House of Commons. Reflecting critically on this experience forms a part of the assessment. There is also the option of a philosophy teaching placement working with young people in local schools.

The aims of this programme are:

• To equip students with an understanding of the value and role of philosophy across a range of practices and subjects. To introduce students to key issues and theories in national and global politics.
• To offer students a range of courses which provides an appropriate introduction in philosophy and politics, and which may allow them to follow up various strands within both academic disciplines.
• To provide a supportive and stimulating learning environment which promotes the intellectual and personal development of students.

Applicants should have:

280 UCAS points

WHICH should include 240 UCAS points gained in a single sitting from at least 2 A2 Levels (excluding General Studies) or A2 equivalent qualification(s)
