The Master of Philosophy is a 1 year research-only masters degree. It provides an opportunity for students to undertake a research topic of an applied or professional nature under the supervision of staff in the Creative Technologies interdisciplinary unit. Alternatively, the qualification can provide a pathway to more advanced research at doctoral level.

Career opportunities

It is expected that graduates with a Master of Philosophy will have gained the necessary skills and qualifications to follow an academic or research career leading to a Doctor of Philosophy. Alternatively, their research topic may lead them to a position of expertise in their chosen field

Duration: 1 year full-time / 2 years part-time

Structure

Students will complete an original thesis during this year of study. Staff in Creative Technologies interdisciplinary unit are available to supervise MPhil research on a wide range of topics.

Entry requirements

In order to be admitted to the Master of Philosophy an applicant must have completed one of the following:

(a) a four-year bachelor’s degree at level 8 or

(b) a bachelor’s honours degree with second class honours or higher or

(c) a bachelor’s degree and a postgraduate diploma or

(d) a bachelor’s degree and at least three years of experience relevant to the proposed programme of research or

(e) a recognised professional qualification or evidence of professional experience approved by the University Postgraduate Board to be equivalent to the level of competence specified in one of 1(a) to 1(c) above.

An application for admission to the Master of Philosophy and the conditions of enrolment are subject to the approval of the University Postgraduate Board.

An applicant who applies under 1(d) or 1(e) above must provide evidence to the University Postgraduate Board of their ability to undertake advanced academic study.

The University Postgraduate Board may require an applicant to complete an approved course in research methods prior to admission.

The University Postgraduate Board must be satisfied that an applicant’s proposed programme of research is viable and the arrangements for supervision are appropriate and able to be sustained prior to enrolment.

Colab PhD/MPhil Fees Scholarship

Purpose and background of award

Colab is the collaboratory for Design and Creative Technologies at the Auckland University of Technology (AUT), New Zealand. Our aim is to encourage researchers, students and stakeholders to imagine, construct, articulate and navigate rapidly changing social, economic, technological and career environments.

To support innovative interdisciplinary research that reflects Colab’s future focused aspirations in such areas as gaming, entrepreneurship, materials design and visualization Colab will offer Fees scholarships for doctoral programme.

 

Entry criteria

  • • The scholarships is open to domestic and international applicants.
  • • Applicants must meet the entry requirements for the PhD or MPhil programme at AUT.
  • • The scholarships are available on merit to New Zealand citizens, permanent residents and international students.

Up to three years for a PhD programme but will be reviewed annually.
 

Application process

The applicant must submit the application by the closing date and upload:
• Copies of transcripts for any study completed at an institution other than AUT 
• A copy of the Research Proposal (PGR1 or PGR2) that will be submitted as a component of the application for admission.

 

Selection process

• The applications will be reviewed and awarded by the Colab Postgraduate and Research Management team. Applications will be evaluated on the basis of the projects potential to enhance Colab's research culture.
• No scholarships will be awarded if the Management team considers the applications not to be of sufficient merit.

• Scholarships will be awarded as soon as possible after the closing date.

 

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?

• Recipients may not hold this fees scholarship together with the Colab PhD scholarship.
• Recipients must accept the Offer of Place before the scholarships is taken up.

 

Additional information

• Preference will be given to applicants who are able to commit full time to their research as they are more likely to make a higher contribution to Colab’s research culture.
• Recipients must submit all six monthly reporting for the research degree programme at AUT during the tenure of the award and for the PhD move from provisional to full registration within the time frame outlined in the Postgraduate Handbook.
