This new programme is a one year masters level qualification in Physics in one of three research streams: Theoretical Physics, Particle Physics or Condensed Matter Physics.

The aim of the programme is to deepen your understanding of your chosen branch of contemporary physics, covering advanced concepts and techniques, leaving you well prepared for further doctoral level study and research. The programme will also enable you to develop skills transferable to a wide range of other careers.

This programme will:

* Teach you the fundamental laws and physical principles, along with their applications, in your chosen area of physics.
* Introduce you to research methodology, and how to manage your own research, making use of journal articles and other primary sources.
* Allow you to communicate complex scientific ideas, concisely, accurately and informatively.
* Instruct you how to use mathematical analysis to model physical behaviour and interpret the mathematical descriptions of physical phenomena.

The programme consists of eight taught and examined modules during the first two semesters and a substantial research project undertaken in the second and third semesters within the relevant research group.

Students will take 120 credits of taught modules and a 60-credit research project.

You will also be allowed to take modules from University College London, King's College London or Royal Holloway, University of London, as per the current intercollegiate arrangements for the MSci in Physics.

The three pathways would have the following preliminary indicative structures (TBC):

MSc Physics (Theoretical Physics)

Semester A

* Electromagnetic theory
* Relativistic waves and quantum fields
* Math methods for Theoretical Physics
* Advanced quantum theory

Semester B

* Statistical mechanics
* Advanced quantum field theory
* Plus two further modules, chosen from a list of approved modules * MSc research project

MSc Physics (Particle Physics)

Semester A

* Particle Physics
* Particle accelerator physics
* Computing and statistical data analysis
* Relativistic waves and quantum fields

Semester B

* Standard model physics and beyond
* Supersymmetry and gauge symmetry
* Advanced quantum field theory
* Relativity and gravitation
* MSc research project

MSc Physics (Condensed Matter Physics)

Semester A

* Atom and photon physics
* Physics at the nanoscale
* Superfluids, condensates, and superconductors

Semester B

* Electronic structure methods
* Order and excitations in condensed matter
* Statistical mechanics
* Plus two further modules chosen from a list of approved modules
* MSc research project

Audience

Physics graduates interested in gaining further specialist knowledge that will prepare you for doctoral level study and research, or develop skills transferable to a wide range of other careers.

We expect students to have at least an upper second class degree in Physics or closely related discipline; in exceptional circumstances students may be admitted with a lower second class degree.Non-native English speaking applicants would have to achieve at least 6.5 IELTS score or the equivalent in the relevant TOEFL assessment. English Language Requirements IELTS band: 6.5 IMPORTANT NOTE: Since April 2014 the ETS tests (including TOEFL and TOEIC) are no longer accepted for Tier 4 visa applications to the United Kingdom. The university might still accept these tests to admit you to the university, but if you require a Tier 4 visa to enter the UK and begin your degree programme, these tests will not be sufficient to obtain your Visa. The IELTS test is most widely accepted by universities and is also accepted for Tier 4 visas to the UK- learn more.
