The BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy program at the University of Bradford is a comprehensive and dynamic course designed to prepare students for a rewarding career in healthcare by developing the essential skills and knowledge required for effective physiotherapy practice. This undergraduate program integrates theoretical instruction with practical placements to ensure that graduates are competent, confident, and ready to meet the diverse needs of patients across various healthcare settings. Throughout the course, students will explore a wide range of subjects, including human anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, exercise therapy, rehabilitation techniques, and evidence-based practice, fostering a deep understanding of the scientific principles underlying physiotherapy interventions.

The program emphasizes a patient-centered approach, encouraging students to develop strong communication, teamwork, and clinical reasoning skills vital for delivering effective treatment plans. Students will engage in laboratory sessions, simulated clinical environments, and real-life placements in NHS hospitals, community clinics, and private practices, facilitating the application of theoretical knowledge in practical settings. The course also covers topics such as pain management, neurology, musculoskeletal disorders, respiratory therapy, and pediatric physiotherapy, providing a broad foundation for specialization after graduation.

Moreover, the University of Bradford's physiotherapy program benefits from strong links with local health providers and industry partners, ensuring that training remains aligned with current clinical practices and health policy developments. The program aims to produce highly skilled practitioners who are committed to lifelong learning and continuous professional development. On successful completion, graduates will be eligible to register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), allowing them to work as qualified physiotherapists. With a focus on fostering innovation, compassion, and excellence in patient care, the BSc Physiotherapy course at Bradford prepares students for a challenging yet fulfilling professional journey in the healthcare sector.

Year 1 emphasises practical learning; you will be encouraged to participate in practical sessions both as therapist and model to develop professional skills. Theory is taught in an integrated manner to allow you to link theory and practice. The student-led clinics are another opportunity to put your skills into practice.

In year 2 the emphasis is on the development of more advanced and specialised skills directed towards the common areas of physiotherapy practice. Your research knowledge and skills will be developed in readiness for year 3 modules. There are ‘practice preparation’ sessions to ensure that you are as well prepared as possible for work based learning, which at this level consists of three placements totalling 540 hours.

In year 3 the emphasis is on independent learning. You will complete a research module which will offer four options – a literature review, a piece of primary research, a research proposal or an audit of an aspect of practice. Work Based Learning placements at this level are worth a total of 60 credits and overall placements contribute a maximum of 46.7% to the overall degree classification.

All module information is for 2019 entry, and is subject to change.

Entry requirements typically include a minimum of two A Levels, with at least one science subject such as Biology or Human Biology being preferred. Applicants are also expected to have a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, including Maths, English Language, and Science. Relevant work experience in a healthcare setting, such as volunteering or shadowing physiotherapists, is highly valued and enhances applications. International students must demonstrate proficiency in English, usually through IELTS or equivalent tests, with a standard requirement of at least 6.5 overall and no element below 6.0. The program looks for applicants with strong communication skills, evidence of motivation to pursue physiotherapy, and an understanding of the profession’s responsibilities. The selection process involves an application form, which is carefully reviewed to assess academic achievement and relevant experience. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to attend an interview and/or a selection day, where they might undergo additional assessments, including numeracy and literacy tests, and participate in activities to demonstrate communication skills. The program may also consider applications from mature students or those with alternative qualifications on a case-by-case basis, provided they can demonstrate relevant experience or competencies. Applicants are encouraged to check the specific entry criteria on the university’s official website for the latest updates, as requirements may vary slightly each year. The university emphasizes that applicants should exhibit a passion for healthcare and a genuine desire to help people improve their physical well-being. It is essential for prospective students to prepare a personal statement that clearly articulates their motivation and understanding of physiotherapy as a career. Given the competitive nature of the program, meeting the minimum entry requirements does not guarantee admission, and the university may select candidates based on the entirety of their application, including academic record, experience, and personal qualities.
