Built on a long-standing transnational collaboration in training and research, the University of Freiburg in Germany and the University of Strasbourg in France offer an International Master programme in Polymer Science (IM-PolyS).
In the intercultural environment of the European Campus, the IM-PolyS aims at providing a comprehensive and interdisciplinary training including chemical, physical and biological aspects of polymer and soft matter sciences. Contacts with industry and early possibilities to specialize according to individual preferences will offer broad opportunities for a career in the industry or academia.
The IM-PolyS is supported by the Franco-German University (Université Franco-Allemande / Deutsch-Französische Hochschule) in the framework of its PhD-Track programme, an ambitious programme linking high-level university studies at the Master level to doctoral research.
M1
- S1 (Strasbourg) : Introduction to polymer and soft matter science, complemented by courses in chemistry and/or physics.
- S2 (Freiburg) : Lab course in "Macromolecular Materials and Chemistry" and advanced courses in polymer and soft matter science.
M2
- S3 à la carte : Contact with industry in polymer science. Then specialization via an advanced practical and elective courses, offered in Strasbourg and/or Freiburg. Here you can find a wishlist for the S3 courses and a table visualizing the structure of S3.
- S4: Master’s research internship and master thesis.
In the framework of the IM PolyS programme an annual Science Day will be
organized where students can present their work.
During both years of the IM-PolyS master’s degree, students will live in an intercultural scientific environment. To promote this intercultural component, intensive language courses are scheduled in the first as well as in the second year - students will be able to choose between French or/and German classes.
The applicant must hold a bachelor degree in chemistry, physics or engineering, or must be about to get this degree. All applicants have to be highly motivated for the interdisciplinary training programme of the master, have proficiency in English, be open-minded to the intercultural setting of the programme and be ready to move between Freiburg and Strasbourg.
List of documents demanded for applications :
- Completed application form
- Curriculum Vitae
- Bachelor degree transcript of grades
- Bachelor diploma or certificate of conclusion
- Letter of recommendation from one or two referees (with contact for eventual details)
- Cover letter explaining the reasons for choosing this particular master’s degree
- A B2 level certificate in English (B1-B2 levels in French and German would be appreciated, but not mandatory as courses are in English)*
- An interview (in person / skype / telephone) might be scheduled in order to verify the candidate’s motivation and level of English
* No student will be allowed to register in September without presenting a B2 level certificate in English..
Scholarships
The French-German University (UFA / DFH) will grant a scholarship to every IM-PolyS master student in order to support her/his mobility during the semesters spent at the partner university (i.e., not the home university where the fees are settled).
The UFA / DFH financial support is 270€ per month of mobility.
During the first year (M1) of the master, the first semester takes place in Strasbourg (S1), and only students who have Freiburg as their home university will be granted with the mobility scholarship. During the second semester in Freiburg (S2), only students who have Strasbourg as their home university will be supported.
The rule that the mobility scholarship will be granted only if studying at the partner university also applies to the second year (M2) of the master (S3 and S4). In M2, students have the choice of where they will spend each semester. Depending on the student’s choice, he/she may receive the mobility scholarship for one or both semesters (or not at all).
Examples: If the student decides to move to the partner university country, he/she will receive 270 € per month of mobility scholarship. Should a student prefer to commute to the partner university instead of moving abroad, he/she may receive only half of the mobility scholarship.
Important: To be eligible for this scholarship, students must register at the UFA/DFH (these pages only exist in French and German)
