The Primary Care MRes programme provides an innovative distance learning research degree which has been shown to meet the need of health service researchers, both in the UK and worldwide. The modular nature enables you to design the taught component around your own training needs, and to study this at a distance. The MRes programme aims to provide an introduction to research development, mainly for those currently in the health care workforce who wish to become researchers or pursue a research pathway within their profession. This is done through a combination of coursework and research training.

After completing the taught component, you will be supported in carrying out your own research project or a full systematic review. Most of the staff teaching or supervising on this programme are from the Institute of Population Health, giving you the opportunity to work alongside international experts in this area.

We offer two MRes programme, one in Primary Care and one in Public Health. Distinction between the two is based on the course units taken and the research topics chosen.

This programme is ideal for Academic Clinical Fellows (ACF's) who wish to gain a research experience in the field of primary care.

The Primary Care MRes programme has four core units that you must complete: Evidence Based Practice, Fundamentals of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Primary Care.

Academic Clinical Fellows taking this programme however must complete the following core units: Research Methods, Fundamentals of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Primary Care.

You are then able to select your remaining two units from a pool of more than 15 options, including some blended learning and face-to-face study options.

After completing all of the taught units, you will progress to your dissertation project. You will be able to choose from a number of different dissertation models designed to cater for different work situations and interests. We advise MRes students to informally contact the dissertation tutor early on in their career to discuss research ideas and plans. Following these discussions, you will then submit a proposal, which following approval will lead to you being assigned a supervisor from The University of Manchester.

You should have a minimum of an upper second class honours degree or the overseas equivalent. Applications with a lower second class honours degree and a minimum of three years professional public health related experience may also be considered. English Language Requirements IELTS band: 7 TOEFL iBT® test: 100 IMPORTANT NOTE: Since April 2014 the ETS tests (including TOEFL and TOEIC) are no longer accepted for Tier 4 visa applications to the United Kingdom. The university might still accept these tests to admit you to the university, but if you require a Tier 4 visa to enter the UK and begin your degree programme, these tests will not be sufficient to obtain your Visa. The IELTS test is most widely accepted by universities and is also accepted for Tier 4 visas to the UK- learn more.

A good way for you to start exploring your masters funding options is to ask staff in your subject area for advice on how previous international students have financed their studies.

You should also contact the ministry of education or education department along with the British Council office in your own country. The location of your nearest British Council office can be found on the British Council website.

Before you start your search for funding you should consider the following:

Funding opportunities are very competitive and are generally given to students that have achieved outstanding academic results and submitted high-quality applications.

The application process for funding opportunities can start very early in the admissions cycle, so you should start looking for funding opportunities 12 to 18 months before you intend studying.

If you need a visa to study in the UK you will need to prove to the immigration officer that you are able to meet both the tuition and living costs which may take the form of bank account information and/or a letter confirming sponsorship.

Our funding opportunities database contains details of the major international student award schemes offered by the British government and other organisations, as well as a number of awards offered by the University and its Faculties and Schools.
