Description

Graduates are employed by programs that provide services to individuals living with serious mental illnesses. These include assertive community treatment (PACT) teams, case management programs, partial care programs, supported employment programs, and supported housing programs. The Bachelor of Science program can be the first or second step of the career ladder in psychiatric rehabilitation education offered by Rutgers SHRP.

Students who enter the program with an Associate of Science Degree in Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Treatment (ASPSRT) continue their education at SHRP with a core course in Case Management and a minimum of 12 credits of upper level psychiatric rehabilitation courses that focus on topics such as vocational rehabilitation, independent living, family support and intervention strategies for individuals with co-occurring disorders. At the partner school they complete the requirements for a psychology major and finish general education requirements for a total of 120-133 credits. The number of required credits depends on the partner school’s requirements, for example the joint program with Kean University requires a total of 124 credits.

Students who do not have the ASPSRT degree enter the program during their sophomore or junior year at the partner school. At SHRP, they complete core courses (21 credits) in psychiatric rehabilitation, a 12 credit practicum sequence, and a minimum of 12 credits of electives in upper level psychiatric rehabilitation courses. At the partner school they complete their psychology and general education requirements for a total of 124-133 credits.

Funding

Rutgers uses your FAFSA to develop a financial-aid package based on your qualifications, financial need and the funds available to the university. Your package may include any or a combination of these major financial aid sources:

  • Gift aid does not require repayment and is divided into three categories: grants (which recognize financial need) and scholarships and awards (which recognize academic merit, special talents, or other achievements).
  • Loans must be repaid (usually after graduation) and can come from private lenders as well as federal, state and university sources.
  • Work-study allows students to earn money for college expenses while gaining valuable skills - often in their intended field.

Accreditation

The Rutgers name is recognized everywhere, and a Rutgers degree makes a great first impression. We’ve built our academic reputation on solid accomplishments:
  • Rutgers is a member—so are Harvard, Yale, and Berkeley—of the prestigious Association of American Universities, the 61 leading research universities in North America.
  • More than 175 Rutgers research centers support pioneering work in stem cells, climate change, DNA analysis, and more.
  • Rutgers’ international reputation draws top students from more than 130 countries and all 50 states.
