Psychology is the science of human and animal behaviour and appeals to people who want to understand more about the nature of such behaviour and social interactions. The Bachelor of Psychological Science provides students with an understanding of the theoretical basis of psychology, critical and analytical thinking skills, data management skills, to be critical consumers and producers of research. Recent changes to the program have enhanced the work-readiness of graduates, and have been recognised nationally in the form of an award from the Australian Federal Government Office of Teaching and Learning.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Psychological Science degree will have a broad and coherent body of knowledge, with depth in the underlying principles and concepts in one or more disciplines as a basis for independent lifelong learning in psychology and behavioural research methodologies. Advanced and innovative topics include conservation psychology, cognitive neuroscience, occupational health, discursive and conversational analysis, psychology and Indigenous Australians and qualitative, community-based and participatory research methods.

Graduates of the Bachelor Psychological Science degree will have: cognitive skills to critically review, analyse, consolidate and synthesise knowledge; cognitive and technical skills (including practical workplace experience, laboratory work and interpersonal skills training) to demonstrate a broad understanding of knowledge with depth in some areas; cognitive and creative skills to exercise critical thinking and judgement in identifying and solving real world and scientific problems with intellectual independence; communication skills to present a clear, coherent and independent exposition of psychological knowledge and ideas. 

Graduates of the Bachelor Psychological Science degree will demonstrate the application of psychological knowledge and skills with initiative and judgement in planning, problem solving and decision making in professional psychology and counselling practice and/or scholarship. They will be able to adapt knowledge and skills in diverse contexts in areas such as professional psychology, mental health, research and project work, social services and human resources; with responsibility and accountability for their own learning and professional practice and in collaboration with others within broad parameters.

This program comprises 108 units including: 54 units of psychology courses (comprising 9 core and 3 elective courses), 1 indigenous content course, 1 professional development course, a 9.0 unit 150 hour work experience placement., and 36 units of electives which provides students with the opportunity to take a Major in another discipline.

Entry requirements

 

To be eligible for selection, applicants are required to:

Qualify for the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE), and

  • obtain a competitive ATAR, and
  • meet any prerequisite requirements with a minimum grade of C-

 

 

Alternatively, applicants can fulfil one of the following requirements with a competitive result, and demonstrate that they fulfil any prerequisite requirements, and other academic requirements for the program:

  • Complete secondary education qualifications equivalent to SACE, or
  • Complete the International Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum score of 24 points, or
  • Complete or partly complete a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution, or
  • Complete at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at undergraduate level or above, or
  • Complete an award from a registered training organisation at Certificate IV level or above, or
  • Qualify for Special Entry, or
  • Complete a University Foundation Studies program

 

English language entry requirements

In addition, international students who speak English as a foreign language must have obtained one of the following standards within the last two years prior to admission. Possession of one or more of these qualifications, in addition to the academic entry requirements, does not, in itself, guarantee a place at the University of South Australia. Applications are considered on an individual basis and selection is competitive. Where previous study/work experience was conducted in English, the application must be accompanied by certified documentation from the educational institution/employer certifying that the language of instruction/employment was English.
