Liverpool is a truly international city, with a flourishing local newspaper and magazine industry and several television companies including the BBC and Granada TV. Lime Pictures (formerly Mersey TV), creators of Brookside, Hollyoaks and numerous other TV programmes, is also located in the city.

Liverpool Screen School is based in the Redmonds Building, in the heart of the bustling Mount Pleasant campus and Liverpool’s growing Knowledge Quarter. The Redmonds Building is shared by three Schools within the Faculty of Arts, Professional and Social Studies: Liverpool Business School, Liverpool Screen School and the School of Law - making for a rich blend of student learning experiences.
The learning facilities on offer here are exceptional and, as well as broadcast studios, news rooms and media production suites, you will have access to high quality lecture theatres, seminar rooms and social spaces. The Aldham Robarts Library, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, is only a short walk from the Redmonds Building and here you’ll find an outstanding range of relevant resources.

The PhD requires:

  • competence in conducting an independent enquiry
  • competence in the use of appropriate research methods and techniques
  • you to be at the forefront of understanding your specialist topic
  • an original, personal contribution to the understanding of a problem, the advancement of knowledge or the generation of new ideas

Requirements

  • Have a Masters degree with a research dissertation in a relevant subject
  • Have had research training directly related to the PhD project
  • An IELTS 6.5 score demonstrating your proficiency in English 
  • Make sure you add as much detail as possible – including grades and results. Without enough information universities might struggle to make a decision.
  • The application fee is £13 if you’re applying to just one course, or £24 for multiple courses 
  • All academic transcripts

  • Copies of degree/diploma certificates or work reference (if employed)
  • One academic reference
  • Your personal statement
  • Copy of your valid passport (with a minimum of 6 months left before expiration)
  • Due to Visa restrictions, international students may only study in the UK on a full time basis. However, you may be able to undertake a part time research degree in your home country and travel to LJMU for campus-based research for a short period each year. Please contact LJMU’s International Admissions Team for further details.
  • To obtain a Tier 4 Visa for full time study in the UK, you will need to show evidence that the money to cover your tuition fees and living expenses has been in your bank account for at least 28 days prior to submitting your Visa application.
