Studies in political science involve courses related to current research in the discipline at Karlstad University which is based on major world changes in terms of regionalism, globalisation and network organisation. Regionalisation means that there will be a growing demandat all levels for experts on issues of local and regional growth, development and administration. Globalisation means that thelocal and regional expertise must include knowledge of both course of events and institutions. Network organisation requires local and regional expertise in governance. At the same time, world changes create a need for knowledge of central political science theories and methods. The relevant theories have been formed to explain and understand radical social change and together with methodology and methodological awareness, they serve as important tools for the local or regional expert.
The programme involves studies at Master"s level in one of the subjects history, human geography, social work, sociology or political science. The programme also includes elective courses, offering opportunities for specialised or broadened knowledge in a multidisciplinary perspective. It offers in-depth subject knowledge with a broadening perspective and preparation for professional life as well as further studies. Students indicate their choice of major on their application.
